The History of The Bore as Chronicled by the Historians of The Bore

TL;DR: This thread is an attempt to create a definitive history of The Bore

In our amusement of all things ResetEra, it’s sometimes easy to forget that The Bore itself, both this version and it’s previous/concurrent incarnation as thebore.com, has been around for almost 20 years, born around the same time as Twitter, Reddit and YouTube. A pretty staggering, and impressive, length of time.

I myself only created an account at the end of May 2023, but lurked on Old Bore since October 2017, having found the forum during the Great Evilore Shower Scandal which led to NeoGAF imploding. I found this place very amusing to read and for some reason continued to lurk regularly.

I’d be very interested in trying to chronicle the history of The Bore with the help of some of the veteran members that are still around. Benji, I imagine you’d be of great help here.

Some topics of conversation that might help:

1: How did The Bore come about in the first place? (I believe it was related to Opa-Ages somehow, right?)

2: Who were some of the original ‘prominent’ members of The Bore?

3: Who were some of the best, and worst, members?

4: Are there any members who suddenly stopped posting that you miss?

5: What were some of the most memorable posts/topics?

6: Were there petty arguments on The Bore that spiralled out of control and led to internal drama?

7: Who were the weirdest members of The Bore?

Here’s my contribution for ‘memorable’ posts. A couple of days before NeoGAF tore itself apart, railGUN wrote this, in hindsight, amusing comment. I wonder how surprised he was by the days that followed?

And on October 17th 2017, nachobro first posted the actual allegation from Evilore’s victim that would quickly lead to the birth of the forum that we’ve all come to know and love. ResetEra!

The Bore existed for more than a decade before you discovered it I think, it already had like five years of memes and culture when I signed up and I had signed up after some time. There was a podcast The Cruncheons for a while. Most everyone here is Second Generation Biremmigrant or later except like bork, chronovore and PD which is why I put them in the Icons group. The Icons on the other board were the "prominent members" at one time. I think the biggest drama was probably Willco just up and abandoning everything suddenly without telling anybody so demi had to save the day.

That's one reason I'm favorable towards a rename for this place because to me The Bore was all that stuff before I ruined it

I appreciate this thread

I knew about the bore for years before the shower goblin event but it was talked about in hushed tones at GAF like it was "that bad site" where everyone had a grudge against lore and for some reason had this mental image that it was like going to 4chan or various other nasty internet haunts

nothing summons a person harder than when they know their presence bothers you

but in general I liked everyone, or at least didn't want to dislike anyone, including kristoffer and great rumbler

stufte was not a "prominent old school bore user" as far as I know, but he was a really cool dude, notably he was briefly on resetera and users there tried to go to his boss to get him fired, probably for using the bore

etoliate seemed interesting, he was mostly before my time and I don't dispute that his ban for posting shock images of the horrors of war was probably legit but even so

Quote:5: What were some of the most memorable posts/topics?

quite a few of these for me but they're all post-shower goblin and usually tied up in era drama as well so that's not representative of the bore itself

like the Black Chamber Cyberpunk debacle

or the death of Cream

The Bore was originally named "Evilbore" after a certain infamous poster who managed to get ownership of the once-great Gaming-Age forums.  Once it became "NeoGAF," it was all downhill from there!  I don't remember exactly what caused the board founder, Willco, to leave and make the forum, but a number of once-prominent GAF posters migrated there.

If you want to see some of the old shit that went on, check the Dysfunctional Hall Of Fame on the original Bore site.

In general a group of people that literally popularized the term: "FUCK HER UP THE ASS (FHUTA)", "It's a trap" and the horrible lazer meme thought they were superior compared to another group of people, many such cases. That has basically always been the case with the GAF crowd, punching down on 4chan (but stealing their memes), the IGN forums (but stealing their scoops) and Gamefaqs (but stealing their guides) and ultimately their own ranks too.

Trumps

Also they used to get their panties(m/f) wet when bishoptl swung his big hammer or one of the many pedo mods schooled folks until they got banned. But eventually they'd get caught themselves and being a protected member or having north of 10k posts only gets you so far. So they moved to boards specifically created to complain about that (The Bore / Opa Ages).
