What did (or didn't) these parents do to these kids? They have no clue how to live on their own after 30 or 40 years!!! I never had kids so I don't think I'm qalified to answer this but on some level I blame Melodies, Nep and Co. parents for their bullshit. Right? If my kids can't live on their own after hitting 30 years old, I fucked up. What do these parents think will happen to their kids after they die? It's one thing to go back with the parent till you get on your feet but just giving up and mooching off them doesn't help anyone.

Even someone like Nep that has more going for her than Mel, will fail in life when her family stops paying her way. She also only can live with help from her parents. Even the ones that seem to live on their own are always asking the most basic "How do I do this?" questions.

Your parents taking care of you during your youth and is just a basic moral and legal obligation they took upon themselves by choosing to have you. You didn't come to the negotiation table demanding anything. If you want to walk away at 18 and have fuck all to do with them again, then fair dues.

Now, I treat my mom well because I have an extremely good personal relationship with her. But I don't inherently feel every child is obligated to be indebted to every parent just because, no more than I feel these Boomers are obligated to leave everything to their kids.

yes its a basic responsibility. That doesn't mean someone can't feel grateful that their parents gave them a good life and set them up to have good opportunities to provide for themselves once they hit adult hood. Ideally, it's the "bare minimum", but we also all know thats not at all guaranteed. Shitty parents exist. Shitty situations exist. I just thought it was a crazy response to someone who was simply expressing gratitude to their own parents.

I feel grateful for everything my parents did for and gave me while also understanding throughout life that they also did some fucked up things or lacked the knowledge I needed in the moment to make sure I wasn't playing catch up later on. Even excellent parents are still fallible people like the rest of us, and thus I'm of two minds that children "owe" their parents something, especially since- again- no one really asks to be born. I think we would all do better to think about and analyze the terms of parental-child relationships beyond the love and bonds that form from healthy relationships. Like, I do the things I do for my mom because I want to, not because I have to, which is what I feel the word "owe" implies.
