We all know how retarded FPTP is, but Reform having the 3rd most votes and only 5 seats compared to LD having 1m less votes and achieving 72 seats is mind boggling. NR getting the most popular votes and projected to win but getting cucked at the last minute by a communist coalition is shocking.

Idk, if I voted for one of those party I would be livid and lose all faith in democracy. Surprised there hasn't been rioting. But we know they won't do shit. western europe loves being replaced.
They've lived all their lives under these systems so they should be pretty aware how they work.

The French system was specifically created to prevent the perceived problems of the Third and Fourth Republics, the Third especially was based on PR and the government was always collapsing from lack of support in Parliament.

Nor is this the first time that all the other parties have done this "sanction" against FN by having the least competitive candidate drop from the second round. Because the Presidency's second round only features two candidates (rather than three) it doesn't get as much attention but all the parties typically endorse the non-FN candidate. That's why the vote FN does get is seen as such an important informative factor, it's the voters rejecting that and still voting for them. The first time it was done, FN got obliterated:
2002: Chirac 82%, Le Pen 18%

But it's been decreasing in effectiveness:
2017: Macron 66%, Le Pen 34%
2022: Macron 59%, Le Pen 41%

That's why RN actually wound up with the biggest increase in seats of all the coalitions and has more seats than it ever has. The victory condition for everyone else is stopping them from winning, but it's not stopping them from growing.

Reform's surge started too late, the Lib Dems are a long time established party and would have been the second choice of Tory-leans who wouldn't want to vote for their party. If Reform had been polling at 15-20% a year ago I expect they would have won more seats.

edit: Also, it should be added that even with PR, RN would not have gained control of Parliament. 67% of the country voted against them in the first round.

I don’t pretend to be in touch, but I’m only now learning the Olympics are happening in Paris from numerous stories of visitors and teams getting robbed or assaulted.

Israel needs to prepare for another barrage of slow moving drones and surplus USSR missiles from 1963.

I'm sure they're shaking in their boots.
