Keeping that in mind, catastrophic military actions have reduced multiple parts of the Middle East to chaos, starvation, and the deaths of countless people, especially elders and children. It would be a dereliction of my platform, however small, to not remind you all of that. I ate a month-long forum-wide ban for upsetting people in a politics thread before the election, and my ban aligned with none of the stated "infractions" that are defined at the bottom of every single politics thread, namely:

“The infractions for breaking the rules will be as follows: on a first offense you will be barred from the threads marked "Politics" for a week. On a second offense you will be barred from the threads marked "Politics" for a month. On a third offense you will be barred from the threads marked "Politics" until the end of the election season.”

When I appealed my ban and asked specific questions about what led to my ban, I received a canned response from the anonymous "Resetera Staff" account stating that my ban was "reviewed" and would stay on record with none of the questions in my appeal form answered or even acknowledged.

What's the point of even having these infraction rules stated if moderation doesn't follow them?
What's the point of having an appeals process if users just get standard form rejections from an account that may as well be a bot?

I'm not here to re-litigate the ban in particular or even the content of that thread. The election is already over and further arguing about the candidates' policies is pointless.
I'm asking why the moderation team doesn't follow its own policies and why there is zero accountability in terms of appeals when everything is hidden behind an anonymous catch-all staff account so that nobody outside of the staff team knows which staff members make which decisions.

I'm aware that posting on a forum is a privilege and this isn't a democracy and whatnot, but it's difficult to have constructive discussion when the rules seem to change arbitrarily.

Numerous people complained about this a few weeks ago. Sad to see nothing has changed.

Don’t even bother trying to appeal or ask about stuff pertaining to a ban , staff here will ignore you, give you a canned response or try and gaslight you to think that you are wrong.

We absolutely want to hear about issues with moderation and/or the community, but that has to be conducive to an actual discussion. Coming in here to simply throw fuel on the fire and attack people is not going to fly. Full stop. We want this to work and we will enforce this to make it work.
• This thread is NOT to re-litigate specific bans, or to call out specific members or moderators. We are talking about the community as a whole here, we are not going to get bogged down with "why was X banned" derails. Making this about individuals is not going to help. Any user(s) brigading for or against an individual will receive at least a threadban from this thread. To litigate a ban (preferably your own) please submit a ticket here
• Keep in mind we're just trying to keep up with hundreds of reports each day. We react, we don't prescribe.
• This should not be a matter of "Us vs. Them". Staff knows very well the part they have to play in making this a better community. Almost every staff member came from an established segment of this larger community, and we all did so because we want to make the site better than it is. But we can't do that if brigades are bent on treating staff as the enemy or as bad people. We do our best to communicate to members with respect, but members also have a role to play in that.

Something I’ve always wondered is WHEN trans athletes decide that they are sufficiently female (there is no threshold ever discussed for this, because you get into messed up areas like minimum oestrogen thresholds, maximum testosterone levels or other measurable characteristics, which is clearly absurd).

If this is happening after puberty, then there’s gotta be a whole lot of middling male athletes that transition and are suddenly like “wow, maybe I really am great at this?!”.

There’s a reason no one wil ever complain about an FtM trans athlete competing in male competition. But the instinctive reflex that every discussion around these issues must be discriminatory and therefore shouted down and silenced means that these points are never addressed .
