Fuck it I'd like an actual Sonic collection with the PS3/360/Wii games. Obviously the Wii games would need work on making the controls not motion based but it'd pretty rad still.

At this rate I think Nintendo may actually release Donkey Kong 64 on the Switch and possibly Diddy Kong Racing, which is one of the best racing games ever. Donkey Kong Country Returns for the Switch is out in a couple months and Nintendo is dropping one game a week which is nice.

What exactly did you find "try-hard edgy" about the first episode?

It was 2-3 years ago or whatever, I just remember it came off as super corny. And it's one thing when the high school bullies come off like a bunch of dipshits, but even the main character also comes off like a dipshit. The one sympathetic moment with his mom in the car came off more as mocking in the same way everything else was bent on trying to sell how shitty and pathetic the world is. And I get that the nihilism is kinda the aesthetic, but it wasn't even crafting a moment out of it. Just "look at these dudes puking and this other dude getting robbed and this other dude getting jacked off by cyber fleshlight and NOBODY CARES WOAAAHHH and then he goes to talk to the dude WHO'S ALSO GETTING JACKED OFF BY THE FLESHLIGHT" and like... In the aggressively on-the-nose way it tries to establish its world, I get it.

The Wire has created a rather ironic problem in that because it is far more accurate than most of what you see on TV people assume that it's real life, but it's not real life.

There is a brand of cynicism that The Wire enables that is dangerous because it is close enough to reality to take time to debunk but not close enough that watching the Wire is a suitable substitute to going out and learning about the problem. People will consider their experience watching a TV show as equal to or perhaps even greater than my experience actually trying to deal with some of the problems depicted in the show.

I'd still rather be doing public policy advocacy to someone who has watched the Wire than to someone who hasn't, but it's definitely a problem.

I guess the Wire was based on Simon's reporting from the 80s. It is depressing that the issues are still similar but it has been 40 years.

It's not about the issues being similar, it's about the fact that people seem to treat The Wire as incontrovertible evidence that it's impossible to make anything better. I have met people who seem to believe that the show gives them everything they need to understand how these institutions work, when the reality is far more complex.

That the Wire is a painfully simplified distortion of the truth is something that I find people strangely reluctant to accept.

It's a great piece of entertainment, though. Structurally it is really quite brilliant.
