It's the only thing we can invest in to retire unless you're rich. The entire Canadian economy is floating on housing investment, so it's a bit nationalistic to speak like this. Houses are vacant because they _need_ to be expensive in order for Canadians to retire. The prices of housing are not just high because of immigration and foreign investment. Houses are not just vacant because of foreign investment. Those are sources of those things, but it's a systemic problem that every single person who flips houses, owns air bnbs, etc.
This post has good intent but smells like the type of nationalism conservatives want to fester in us. Yes, we need to reduce immigration, yes we need to limit foreign investment in housing, but we need to also understand that doing so will not fix our problem, and isn't the soul reason we're in the problem in the first place. Long before the immigration boon this was a problem. It's just more of a problem now because of late stage capitalism. So until we abolish it, it won't get better. As long as we bow to capitalism, these will continue to be a problem. Capitalism cannot fix it, and will not fix it.
Politicians, both "liberal" and conservative alike are trying to sell us that they'll fix this by stopping immigration, defunding social services, getting rid of a tiny tax, or whatever.
Bottom line, none of that will do anything, and we're in this for the long run.
Houses are expensive because people, primarily Canadians, are greedy.
Houses are expensive because investors use them to turn a profit, and not to provide a human right.
Food is expensive because corporations are greedy and drive profit for stake holders and not a service to the community.
Houses are scarce because that drives value, developers are not incentive to build the right density and type, due to Canadians not wanting it, and governments of all flocks not supporting it.
Immigration is high, not because we want to be diverse and bring in different perspectives, it's high because we want cheap labor and we have a huge amount of jobs no Canadians can afford to live on doing.
Everything is completely fucked here, and no one I know really seems to get it. People just think it'll blow over, or that Trudeau somehow is the reason we're in this mess and if he's gone, it'll suddenly get better.
Sigh.
