Seeing some Israeli media writing about the legal risks IDF face when traveling abroad and things they need to keep in mind.

These murderers should never be able to vacation in peace. I hope this fear of accountability and prosecution hang over them for the rest of their lives.

 

A 21-year-old Israeli reservist traveling in Brazil fled the country after a federal Brazilian court ordered police to open an investigation into claims that he committed war crimes in Gaza.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry said that the Consular Services and the Israeli Embassy in Brazil escorted him and his family until he crossed the border out of the country.

The order came following a complaint filed by the Hind Rajab Foundation, a pro-Palestinian organization based in Belgium, which claimed that the soldier actively contributed to the destruction of homes in Gaza. His father confirmed to Israeli news outlet Ynet that his son has left Brazil, and that the family is awaiting his return to Israel.

The case opened against the soldier says that on November 12, he was filmed with his friend right before a strike that destroyed houses in the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza. In the footage attached to the court filing, two soldiers are seen in front of a partially destroyed building, smiling to the camera. One of them is alleged to be the soldier who was in Brazil until recently.

In a different video, shared on social media and also attached to the court filing, a controlled explosion in the Strip is shown, with the sound of soldiers laughing n the background. One of the soldiers can be heard humming the song The Final Countdown. According to the court, both pieces of footage are from the same place, with the first being taken some time before the second.

Meanwhile, there are further reports that hundreds of Chilean attorneys have contacted the authorities of Brazil and Argentina, in a request to arrest another Israeli reservist visiting South America.

A Ministry of Diaspora Affairs report from late December lists other soldiers who were named on social media as those who took part in the war in Gaza and have gone abroad. Different accounts on X and Instagram have been doxxing soldiers who posted footage of them participating in the fighting in Gaza, by exposing their personal details online.

There are often direct links attached to these posts that lead to the soldier's own social media accounts, and the doxxers encourage other users to attack the soldier online, call their workplace, or harass their family. In some cases, the posts would say the soldier is currently vacationing in a specific country – what could be interpreted as a call to physically harm them.

So, first of all, as we all know, doxing is wrong and nobody should do it. Second of all, these are people who are identified with actual allegations (even if questionable), not remotely every Israeli citizen. The concern expressed by the Israeli officials in the piece is that people like effingvic will not distinguish the two. Obviously, Israeli officials don't consider any of their citizens to have committed war crimes in Gaza but the distinction between those who can be accused of at least something and all Israelis is important or it's easy to drift into the claim that any and all Israelis should fear "no peace" outside of Israel. Something I don't think effingvic, any of the other regulars in that thread or silenced members like Nepenthe would have any problem at all with.
