I don't get it, r-word never left.
I never understood why that word in particular became considered beyond the pale when its journey from medical term for someone of below average intelligence to insult is the same as every other euphemism — idiot, imbecile, moron, dullard, etc.
When I was young, kids somehow managed to turn the word ‘special’ into an insult because the euphemism du jour was ‘special needs’. It’s what they do.
