This new free speech thing seems...deeply retarded?
As I continue my dark descent into Vance-posting, I think the thing he said in the speech I didn't actually watch about "being afraid of your own electorate" (he said that, right?) is so...milquetoast as to be embarrassing for anyone who thinks it's some slippery slope into a New Holocaust.
Representative government is intended to, well...represent its constituents. If the representatives are looking at a massive swathe of the population of the country they ostensibly represent and muttering behind their palms "er...well...I dunno about these weirdos...", they are choosing to fail at the most elemental part of the role.
That doesn't mean if you have racist voters, the answer is to "be racist". But the answer is definitely not "well, let's just alternate between making fun of these people and pretending we can't hear what they're saying lalalala".
