HOAs are one of those hilariously American things that make no sense to anyone else.

You guys call them body corps or stratas.

don't worry, in most cases they don't make sense to americans either

I get that it might be good to have certain standards for upkeep of a property but let the city dictate that, that should be sufficient

They typically are not inside any cities or townships, that's how the land was available to be purchased by it in the first place.

The development company purchases a big plot of land, then as people buy the parcels they agree to become part of the HOA because they aren't sold to anyone who doesn't agree.
