instead of coming together with a unified message against it as a talking point, the Dems waived it off and let the GOP build on it over and over for YEARS

the fact that they STILL don't have a proper counter message across the party is frankly gross

But they had been counter messaging it for years?
"1. It's not happening.
2. Even if it is, it's a good thing."

And wedge issues only exist in the first place if one of the parties takes an extreme position that it refuses to back down from. This is why abortion is and always will be a wedge issue. It's why Democrats have been scared of immigration for decades because they constantly talk themselves into believing Latinx aren't against it because they imagine immigrants are all Latinx and all Latinx are immigrants.

I mean, to be fair, I've never really seen California as some bastion of actual institutional progressivism so much as it is just a place with a bunch of rich liberals.

How can nobody ask her for any examples of actual progressivism anywhere in human history?
