2. Even if it is, it's a good thing."

And wedge issues only exist in the first place if one of the parties takes an extreme position that it refuses to back down from. This is why abortion is and always will be a wedge issue. It's why Democrats have been scared of immigration for decades because they constantly talk themselves into believing Latinx aren't against it because they imagine immigrants are all Latinx and all Latinx are immigrants.
