I don't mind it myself but I can see why folks have a problem with it changing after they already bought and played the game. Especially those in regions where you can't sign up to PSN or like in the UK where these services require you to upload your photo ID because of silly government regulations.
For a PvP game this sort of makes sense but for a PvE game where you shoot hordes of bugs and bots it's kind of silly to demand accounts and sign ups.
Especially when it wasn't necessary before.
The reason I play mostly on Switch is that it is entirely frictionless. I seldom have to deal with any sign ups or even patches.
Sony clearly put this in to 'regulate' who can play the game as this allows them to ban or limit people from playing in certain regions.
Overall I think push back against this is good, people that make these decisions are cut from the same cloth as those that add draconic DRM measures to Mega Man games.
