These motherfuckers compared it to every single game that has been released on steam, Xbox, e-shop and PSN and only relied on whether the game is tagged "LGBT" ignoring that you'll easily have games with gay side characters that aren't labeled LGBT.
Quote:For the purposes of this report, and to set a baseline against which future industry efforts can be measured, GLAAD quantified the number of available games with LGBTQ content against the total number of games presently available.14 We did this by identifying games on the major PC and console distribution platforms that are publicly tagged or listed as having LGBTQ content. As this report looks at the current gaming world, we focused on games that the average consumer looking for LGBTQ content could easily find in the console/platform stores when searching for LGBTQ tags.
GLAAD counted the number of games that have been tagged as having LGBTQ content as of November 2023 from Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo, and Steam (PC). According to Microsoft, there were 146 console games available in the Xbox store that had LGBTQ content. PlayStation maintained a list that includes 90 games. The Nintendo Switch eShop listed 50 games with the tag LGBT. Steam’s LGBTQ+ tag returned 2302 games available in English (as of November 2023), but that number dropped to 1506 when games with “adult only sexual content” were filtered out.15
In context, however, these games account for less than 2% of Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo’s total digital libraries. For Steam, it is less than 2.5%, but drops to just 1.7% when adult-only games are excluded
For context, in 2024 steam has released 12068 new games. Claiming that all 12k of those represent the industry is fucking retarded. It's filled with garbage shovel ware, clones and whatever else.
Furthermore, and perhaps an even bigger flaw, they do absolutely nothing to compare it to the number of games with hetero content. Tons of puzzle games, platformers, shooters etc. will never address sexuality in any way or form, so claiming that these are all games for straight people is again, fucking retarded.
Wow, this seriously just made me mad. Like how the fuck are none of these game journalists calling this out?
Why are they only looking at tags?
Taylor Swift albums aren't tagged "LGB" on storefronts, but nobody is going to say they don't have a pretty fucking sizable gay audience
Why are they excluding AO games?
If you're looking for specifically LGB themed games - ie games about sexuality - then surely having sexual content in the game is literally part of the fucking point?
Why are they looking at the entirety of the current offerings on the storefronts, some of those games being over a decade old by now, if not even older, then comparing that to current releases by Hollywood this year?
If you add up more than a century of cinematic theatrical releases currently purchasable for use on modern devices in some format, its a lot fucking lower than the 28% of film and 11% of TV shows cited in the article. I wouldn't be surprised if using their own fucking criteria consistently, Gaming comes out looking better than filmed entertainment in general.
(I actually know exactly why they've done it this way, and it is obnoxious.)
DID YOU EVEN USE BAYESIAN THINKING THO, BRO?
