There's a much more simple reason than racism why Apollo was black in Rocky.

From about 1960 onwards to when Rocky was made in the 70s (and after) the heavyweight champion of the world was pretty much exclusively black.

Having a white heavyweight champion would have been laughable by the standards of the time.

Also, it's pretty fucking disingenuous to call Rocky white™. Italians were very much an underclass in the 60s and 70s.

Creed was based around Ali. They had a skit at the Oscars where Ali pretends to fight Stallone over it.

Those Oscars were sort of famous for Rocky winning over All the President’s Men, Network, and Taxi Driver. You see people talk about vibe shifts nowadays. Post Vietnam, audiences wanted clear morality, feel good, universal underdog stories. Rocky, Star Wars, Superman hitting year after year.

tl;dr Top Gun Maverick should’ve won the Oscar for best picture

Rocky is a genuinely good film. The sequels were very popcorn, especially 3 and 4, but there's no denying the quality of 1 and 2.
