I wanted to address something about scapegoating minorites: we know its going to happen, opportunistic people waiting to blame minorities. But we need to also understand that minorities criticizing minorities is not a horrible thing because yes we KNOW (a majority) of white people are gonna vote the way they do, and they dont get enough flack for this shit. hell every black person knows some white person who voted for Trump but tries to tell you it wasnt against you (it is) but when one minority bloc sees another also vote against our issues? Now for something completely different… but all too familiar, over in Constructive:

We are discussing forum restructuring.

In the meantime we are thinking of pushing the politics/trump stuff into the elections section. Admin will rename the section too. We will look at enabling users to ignore this section. Same goes for US Politics prefix/tag. I'm not sure if these will remain ignorable in the long term, it is part of the staff discussion and user can continue offering thoughts here.

It has been busy so I'm not entirely sure when all the changes will happen exactly. Thanks for your patience.

People discuss more of those sub-forums and tags back and forth when Dumbs shows up, extra salty…

OK, so people are absolutely clear: There will still only be Gaming and Etcetera as the forums. Those will still be the only two feeds.

What we have been discussing internally is using embedded subforums to make our lives easier (create more filtering on reports so we can tell at a glance what sort of threads need attention) and to allow for better tags on threads. The big example of this would be the US Elections subforum, which has generally worked. When a thread gets posted in there it automatically gets the "US Politics" tag and people have been good about posting threads in there. This allows people to quickly spot threads that interest them or just ignore it altogether. It also allows us to tell, at a glance, if there's an issue in said threads.

Now imagine this applied to gaming side. If you're only interested in Sony and Nintendo, you can just filter the tags so that only threads with those prefixes show up as every thread posted in those "subforums" would get the tag automatically. This would also allow for studio specific tags, so if you're looking for threads on, for example, a Naughty Dog game/announcement, all you would need to do is select the tag and all those threads would show up.

Seriously, when we're talking about "subforums" we aren't talking about the Entertainment Forum debacle. We still remember getting compared to war criminals over that one. All it would be is an expansion of the "US Elections" subforum thing that has worked fairly well. There's an initial proposal we're discussing, when we nail that down, along with the revamped thread tags, we'll post it in here for people to take a look at.

I just wanted to make it clear, there will still only be Gaming and Etcetera forums. That is not changing in the slightest. This is just a way for us to make our own lives easier and to give you all a better way of filtering out threads you don't want to see or letting you more easily find threads that interest you. That's all this is. If that goes well, there's actually an even cooler idea we've been working on mapping out.

EDIT: I should also note that we have totally revamped the "Trending Threads" feed so that it only shows threads that have had activity within the last week. As a result it should be a much better reflection of the sorts of threads people are looking at/posting in.

It's literally this. The last time we tried something like this, back when I was just a regular mod, the outrage was truly insane and we literally got compared to war criminals. I'm not kidding, that literally happened.

Hell, when we added prefixes people lost their goddamned minds.

Seriously, any time we make any changes some of you guys lose your shit in the most absurd ways possible. So when we make a larger move like this, it needs careful consideration.

It's disappointing to read this as it shows there has been a lack of reflection from staff on previous events

Yes, it's insane you were called war criminals, but you reverted the changes the same day, and it wasn't because people were calling you names, it was because the vast majority of users raised points your team hadn't considered or anticipated and in the end you quickly agreed it wasn't ideal, and so it was moved back. The forum had to be shut down for hours in order to do this if I remember correctly. This could have been avoided if you had discussed the changes first.

Prefixes, the same thing, they dropped randomly out of nowhere and ruined the visual flow of the forum page. This was later changed and fixed, but it still looked rubbish for a while. You also added an option to turn prefix's off, which I'm guessing a lot of people did (because I did) and now I don't see them on any of the forums or when I'm looking at thread OPs. It's not a surprise a lot of posters "forget" to tag threads, it's that you basically let users opt out completely so for many posters they're probably not even something they consider when making a thread.

Shadow dropping massive changes to the forum you've not discussed outside of the small staff bubble has backfired many times, going all the way back to when the new themes were (again) shadow dropped with no discussion or communication beforehand.

The thing is, you do eventually get things right in the end. It would just make more sense to actually communicate things first rather than keep them a secret until one day everyone logs on to find things different. You are right in that people always do overreact, but doing things this way is always the hardest and most combative way of doing things. If you at least say "this is what the idea is" then if users raise good points or potential improvements you can address and/or implement them beforehand.

Careful consideration is good, but you can consider carefully and then explain what you're going to do so that posters can provide feedback.

Good luck with the changes anyway, I'm sure it's a lot of work from all involved.

Literally just communicate, staff. Engage with the community about prospective changes beforehand. Involve them. That way you can see if they're even desired, people aren't blindsided into a hostile reaction, and things can be workshopped for a smoother and more palatable transition for all parties.

But this advice is never heeded.
