I understand wanting moderation to feel personable. But over the years ive grown tired of them weighing into topics with their personal opinion. It creates an inherent power inbalance and encourages certain groups to act out because of the appearance of having the moderation teams backing. it also creates a silencing effect where if you disagree with a moderator you are aware that your post will likely get more scrutiny. I think it puts people off from discussing stuff creating a further echo chamber. Im not suggesting that mods become 100% anonymous, we know modbot was a failure for that reason. what im suggesting is that mods have their personal account for personal interaction with the community, but that account can still get actionned for breaking the rules and users can ignore them if they wish. and they have a corresponding mod account which is for official actions and communications only named in a way so people dont know which mod account belongs to which user. I think its jsut no longer good that the mod team puts their thumb on the scales on certain topics as it has contributed to some of the toxicity we see in the community where we often see a "its okay to act like an asshole solong as i am correct" mentality. Which coincidentally is something i believe should be moderated what use is being a completely "progressive space" if everyone is always taking chunks out of each other for not 100% following the correct opinions we need to be able to feel safe to disagree or even the space to get something wrong and learn without being treated like an active member of the republican party.

On the last community thread I said something similar and got thread banned for "conspiracy theories" and misrepresenting moderation. It's absolutely a thing that happens. Some users have basically made hijacking threads to be snarky assholes their entire schtick but since they're on the right side of the argument nothing happens. I ended up putting most of these users on ignore once I realized they have a carte blanche to do whatever they want without consequence.

That's because you insinuated the mod staff was using posters as mouthpieces and giving them immunity to punishment to push agendas. As you are here. Which isn't true.

You're mad because you've gotten bans for being on the "wrong side of the argument", sure I get that. But if the wrong side was a viewpoint bad enough or expressed badly enough to get you banned, whose fault is that? Has nothing to do with the mod staff or anyone else. That's a you problem.

I appreciate that. Mistakes in wording happen, it's just that the hostile implication that not everyone is treated the same is serious. To be frank, most of the biggest blowups we have had were because people who were "in the right" were still banned because of the language they used while expressing their anger and frustration with the given situation.

I also don't deny that there is perceived to be an imbalance when conversing with a moderator. Like right now, you may be feeling the need to be aggressively apologetic to make sure you don't get banned. Are you sweating, waiting for the axe to drop? I think about that often which is why I rarely engage in direct conversation on the forum outside of jokes and lighthearted threads. I don't WANT my mere presence to be a downer.

Thing is, if I post like this, it's usually because I decided that the conversation would be more fruitful than the moderation. I like conversations. I like to save situations from escalating. I'm big on outreach.

In my years of being a mod, only one person has gotten banned in a direct back and forth with me. And it was due to them getting reported by someone else for ignoring my explanation of why they were being racist about the music in a game trailer. And even then I gave a couple more tries before they had gone too far and other staff made the decision. I tried.

I guess my last thought is that asking the mods to not engage with the community is unrealistic.

If you don't mind, I'd appreciate it if you'd explain what you mean by threads being "hijacked without consequences". What type of threads on which side of the forum? If there is something we're missing, I would like to hear about it.

Over the years I've seen situations, mostly on the off topic side but it does happen on gaming side too, where a user will just feel the need to spam a thread in a very confrontational manner, either picking fights, ban baiting or just posting borderline spam to the point the thread becomes hard to read for everyone. And once the thread is closed, either because people get too angry or it's become too derailed, nothing happens. The user then does the same thing on another thread and the cycle repeats. I had to block, for example, a specific user who I won't name after a thread in offtopic where they became the top poster, with twice as many post as the next two users combined, and it was mostly drive by shit, which just went unchecked forever. Trying to read through that thread was just impossible. I can't even remember what the thread was about at this point since it was so long ago. And this user has (or had) a pattern of doing this all the time. It's hard after some time not to start believing the leash isn't as tight when something like that happens and it's the same people every single time.

Everything is always, "We never do that!  Only when it's for the greater good do we do it.  But it's not wrong when we do it.  How dare you you imply that!"

The economic rational is strange because it is down for EVERYONE across all income brackets. If it was just because economics then there wouldn't also be a dramatic drop off from the affluent. I don't think if a poorer person hit the mega millions they would all of the sudden transform into a social butterfly now that they have the capital to do whatever they wanted.

It's amazing the amount of people I hear from whose dream is just to have a house in the middle of nowhere and no longer have to interact with society. That always sounds like hell to me. Even as someone who has just started to become more social the idea of not having any more social interaction outside of wife doesn't sound enticing at all.

I feel like the ever increasing surveillance nature of people outside has been a big contributor in people not socializing. Every instance of something mildly "weird" has multiple people excited to pull out their phones and record so people's anxiety is always high lest they become the next "look at this weirdo in public." The amount of times I've seen someone try to record someone because they didn't have a perfectly choreographed dance is depressing. All of my favorite person-to-person interaction these days has minimal to 0 cell phones

This is a less discussed catalyst for this surge of non-sociability. How the fuck are people, especially younger people, suppose to hone and refine their social skills without running the risk of being the center of attention of thousands of people just because a faux pas or their inherent difficulties with socializing? They're being conditioned into turning everyday life happenings into "content" that needs to be consumed and analyzed to such a degree that it's giving them bouts of absolute paranoia.
