Hi everyone, is anyone familiar with unemployment benefits?

I moved to California from Texas for a new job last month, only to get laid off 3 weeks into it. I applied for unemployment benefits in CA but got put on hold/denied because I apparently have no reported wages in CA. Technically, that's not correct because I have 3 weeks of pay? The company gave me checks instead of Direct Deposit because I got let go during my very first payroll week.

Then I got a notice from the CA unemployment office that should apply for unemployment in…Texas?

The thing is that I was laid off from my old job in TX in November 2023 (before the new CA one), and I got TX unemployment benefits from December 2023 to December 2024. Basically I was unemployed from December 2023 until March 2025, and now I'm unemployed AGAIN.

So I have to open another unemployment claim in TX even though I don't live there anymore? Is that right? That just sounds weird to me. If anyone has gone through a similar situation or know what the proper protocol is, that'd be great.

At the time, I thought I was just an ally and was neglecting to reflect on why this stuff has always pulled at me the way it does.

I knew 2 yrs ago that I might be trans. I came out last August at 38 yrs old. So far, it's going pretty well. The most friction I get is with doctors -- in my city, the only ones with availability and who will do GAC are young and cling to outdated guidelines like scripture. Most people either stare, trying to clock me probably, or are indifferent. And I live in the prairies of Canada, the part of this country I figure I could most expect to be harassed openly.

Anyways, I wanted to introduce myself I guess? I haven't participated directly in any trans-related discussion or thread here as yet -- mostly because they don't seem to be as common or as popular as they used to and I miss them when they aren't Page 1. I'll subscribe to this one so I don't miss it.

Okay, so I made a thread a bit ago talking about my life changes and it was about this hike but I wanted to make a proper thread about it.

In 15 days I leave for Georgia to start my hike.. I quit my job, sold a ton of my stuff, and have paused or stopped all of my subscriptions.

I plan to live out of a backpack for the next 5+ months, walking over 2000 miles from Georgia to Maine.

My hope is to update this thread regularly to share this with those that are interested. I've also been considering vlogging the trip on YouTube so we'll see if that happens.

Anyway, just thought I'd do this officially.

*Edit: I did make this thread before a few years ago but never followed through. I'm 100% doing this. Whether I succeed or not is another story.

I don't doubt his Asperger's and his trust fund led to some of his early success. After that, and I'm taking the opportunity for some self reflection, he invested in industries that appealed to the nerdier and those who wanted to see more progressive technology. He was really the only billionaire successfully doing that, which is why so many gravitated towards what he was doing. Remember that he was also going on Twitter saying "love who you want to love" at the time, too. Clearly there were labor treatment concerns, but that group of people, including myself, recognised he wasn't fitting the same mould as your classic money-hoarding billionaire. There were things I should have paid more attention to during all that.

Elon had no trust fund and Silicon Valley has been awash in "progressive" billionaires. These people repeat endlessly that Elon didn't found Tesla until they have to pretend he was somehow the only one. The federal and state governments were giving away billions in subsidies for electric cars and useless "progressive technology" like solar crap too, there's all kinds of companies and grifts. There's probably been trillions sloshing around in these areas.

The "classic money-hoarding billionaire" hasn't existed in over a century and probably didn't even exist then. You made up a stereotype in your head, then decided to worship some dude because he was the same as everyone else, now you're reflecting that you should have assumed your stereotype was true even though it doesn't fit. Elon even was selling his own snake oil in his famous TEDTalk about batteries.  

Notice that this guys resolution to doing better doesn't involve learning more about any topics, he doesn't even know the above stuff he got wrong, but instead committing to more rigid ideological checks in the future as if the problem was just that he hadn't read Elon closely enough to find doctrine errors.

It seems exhausting to always have to pick a side on whether or not you like a movie based on whether or not somebody is complaining about it. Even worse is the idea that if you do like or dislike a movie you must be on some "side" in some social media war. I've never really encountered this attitude with friends but it seems to be very common on forums like this or on Twitter.

One of the common critiques of cancel culture is that it doesn't actually have any effect on elites, especially those whose fanbases don't care about whatever they are trying to be cancelled for. Instead the main thing it does is pick off low level employees who might like a tweet about Hogwart's Legacy or be videoed doing something out of context so they can be replaced with employees less likely to express any free will.

The other is that when it does effect elites it's mostly used for internal party faction conflict, like was happening at media organizations like the NYT or WaPo. Or how all of Breadtube or whatever cancelled each other, remember how we hate mainstream media stars Contrapoints and Lindsay Ellis and Keffals now and always thought they were sus?

It also can't solve the problems its purporting to target because it claims to be going after systemic issues by targeting individuals. This "culture", which dominates that forum, regularly approaches topics in this manner, just imagining if it could get all chuds to disappear things would be perfect. Such as its hourly fantasy that if it could just do violence to the right people all would be great. It also gets upset when people suggest that perhaps there's a reason chuds keep appearing that it should focus on instead, although not as angry as any accusations that it causes chuds by reaction.
