Watched Casablanca yesterday.

Although I had seen bits and pieces I've never watched the full movie. I won't immediately jump on "the best hollywood movie ever" bandwagon but I was surprised by how well it holds up for a film made in 1942. Kind of surreal to watch a movie set in World War 2 made during World War 2. Some scenes were a bit out of place like some waiter slapstick but overall I liked it.

As I watched it unfold I couldn't help but think of a Winston Churchill quote: "Americans will always do the right thing, only after they have tried everything else" which is the perfect summary of the tale.

Went to see Gladiator II.

Liked it a lot. Sure it's not a groundbreaking film like the first movie and a bit sloppy in places like most modern films but still a great watch.
Denzel is fantastic, cinematography is on point, pacing is good. I greatly enjoyed it.

I had a similar reaction, I watched it for the first time earlier this year as well. It’s absolutely wonderful. What I don’t understand is how they shot the film to make everyone’s eyes look so amazing. People’s skin appears soft and almost romanticized, but their eyes sparkle and glow. I’ve never seen anything like it in any other movie.

It is also a surprisingly emotional, moving story. I will likely rewatch it repeatedly.

To give Visawife his credit, in the thread about the Brutalist he was talking about how good Childhood of a Leader was.

And you know what? he was ruddy bloody right n'all.

I'd never even heard of this film but it's brilliant.

American diplomat moves his family over to france to complete the treaty of versailles. His son is a right little cunt and gets up to all sorts of bother.

Slow but menacing. Like there will be blood or something.

Old Man's War really is well suited to adapting into a film. There's a sense of discovery as the old world is left behind and a new one opens up to the characters and the readers/viewers.

Spielberg is probably the best pick for it as it combines humour and sci-fi in a way that he's very good at doing.

the synopsis of it sounds like $$$ with Spielberg on board.

I haven't cared much for his most recent stuff but I'm down for this.

One thing that surprised me is that I watched a few newer movies ones made this and last year...and while they could be considered woke they aren't half bad they are the rental store type fodder that you watched back in the day, and they weren't great or anything, but you still didn't feel like you wasted your money or time!

I can safely recommend a few...

Totally Killer Back to The Future meets direct to video slasher flick...set in modern times and the 80's!

Spoiler:  (click to show)
Killer cut I also recommend and is basically a knock off of the former... lol Set in modern times and the early 00's!

It's a Wonderful Knife, and yes it's exactly like it sounds it's a Wonderful Life but a slasher flick!

Violent Night it's about a tired of the world Santy Claus, and this movie turns into a Die Hard knock off with some awesome fucking kills! Well it's not like Die Hard wasn't meme'd into being a Christmas movie!

Spoiler:  (click to show)
Graveyard Shark a Tromaville esque style slasher flick with some Dead Gentlemen Productions mixed in, and a splash of fucked up Scooby Doo style caper!

I watched Street Trash yesterday and that was thing...loved the practical effects and stayed for the old movie just for the hell of it nudity... I also watched the Street Trash Remake/Sequel/Reboot, that was produced in South Africa it was pretty out there but still had a blast with it! Now that I thought about it some more it's more like a spiritual sequel to District 9 than Street Trash! It's not that I didn't with the original but the bums which were the main characters were absolute scum! But then again just about everybody was too, truth be told!

There's this idea that Edward Norton fucked up his Hulk line in the MCU.

The fact he did this is proof that he commits to the content, and it's probably just the mcu hulk content that was shit?

Ed Norton Jr. is famously pretty aggressive about re-writing his lines and wanting control over the writing, so it's unsurprising that approach fell flat with the Marvel Studios showrunners who were trying to craft a giant epic around multiple movies.

He's ALWAYS good. He never should have taken the contract, but then again no-one knowing his rep should have offered it.

I like Ruffalo as Banner, who has a homey, dopiness in his "genius" presentation that is a lovely counterpoint to RDJ's effete, sarcastic, competitive asshole approach.

Does it tie into the Cobra Kai Universe at all? I still need to watch that show.

I'm not sure I've watched all of Cobra Kai other than the last season that still hasn't fully released...I watched some youtube videos on the subject and they are pretty much pointing fingers on greed from Will Smith and Co who apparently own the KK franchise when they made that remake starting his retarded son. The gossip rag YT channels were pretty much of the opinion the point of this KK meets the Kung-Fu Kid movies is to get people interested in the revival of the Jaden Kung-Fu Kid series. On the other hand I think the direction that the CK series in heading is some spin off show about a young Miyagi.

Spoiler:  (click to show)
Of course I could have gotten some of these facts mixed up since I have not finished all of Cobra Kai, and watching those YT gossip rag type channels is grating...

I watched a shit ton of movies over the last four weeks, hanging out with my brother-in-law in California, and a couple of trans-Pacific flights. For the curious, I’ve been updating my Letterboxd account.

Casino Royale, as I’ve done many times before. Still great. I think there were four Craig Bonds and I never cared much for the rest. But what a start to his run.

Love the bits where they bluntly explain poker. They already changed it from baccarat to simplify things. Scenes of Mathis explaining “Aces are worth more than Kings” or Bond explaining a tell and bluffing.

Unmarked Venom 3 spoiler: it unironically does the Fast and Furious 7 ending. The montage of past moments are mostly from the movie you just watched. Scenes from 40 minutes ago. Instead of celebrating a co-star of a franchise passing after 14 years or so, it’s about two characters played by Tom Hardy in a franchise started like five years ago. It’s kind of amazing.

Regarding Bond, there’s a recent story about friction between Amazon’s now owned MGM and Eon. Always with these stories there are motivations in painting certain parties certain ways. But basically, the reporting is Amazon being exactly how you’d expect a parody to act. Going on about “content” and “what if Bond isn’t good guy?” And Eon wanting to continue on as they have. Either way, apparently they have nothing yet. No actor, no director, no writers, no premise.

I’ll admit I fell for fake news, because I’ve been under the assumption Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Kraven the Hunter) was the guy.

Based on nothing, I think they’re going to do a remake of Goldeneye. Or remake the Connery movies.

Craig peaked with Casino Royale and maybe it should've just ended there? Casino Royale + Quantum of Solace is basically an extended cut.
Skyfall while a decent flick was more less saved by the performance of Javier Bardem because there was nothing that stood out plot wise.

The idea to bring Christoph Waltz(Hans Landa) aboard as Blofeld in Spectre had a lot of promise but they fumbled that one and it wasn't as good as it should've been.
No Time to Die is great for the first hour or so but then falls off pretty quickly. The best acting like the interactions between Craig and Fiennes is spread very thin and killing off Felix removes another fun character of the film. Modern movies like to kill off the goofy side characters for shock value but those really add some flavor into the mix. The movie would've been way more fun if Craig lamented being poisoned and Felix had an antidote from his buddies at the CIA that Ana des Armas was hiding between her tits or whatever. Mission Impossible gets that right, the stakes are high but its fun and it gives all the characters something to do.

I honestly don't know what you can do with this thing at this point.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson was great in Bullet Train and it was a very fun film and I highly doubt that is something the people making Bond want to go for these days.

Sure, but like…what is melissa mccarthy (occasionally as herself) doing here? She’s not a 9, but also clearly not just a human. is she a well-connected sloth or something? What’s up with elle fanning’s character?

I’m not actually looking for answers here. Just sort of enjoying how much it has a “Bro…what if the world is a giant pizza???” quality to it.

Carry-On isn’t particularly good, but I like how the director, Jaume Collet-Serra, keeps making the same movie. Previously, The Commuter and Non-Stop. His next movie is a Cliffhanger reboot, which is conceptually similar. Some guys like what they like and it’s admirable.

On Bond: The last Craig film, No Time to Die, wasn't bad at all, but both it and SPECTRE turned up the emotional schmaltz on a character who doesn't need a growth arc. There are stories where the world changes the character, and stories where the character encounters unbalance in the world and becomes the force which corrects the aberration; the character changes the world (back to normal).

Yes, Casino Royale worked despite being an origin story, despite wanting to have its double-o cake and eat it, too. Unfortunately the lesson they took away from it was that every entry required emotional growth for an iconic character, instead of recognizing the one-off-ness of an origin story. They pull that lesson far too hard in Spectre, where it becomes about daddy issues for both Bond and Blofeld (WTAF) and carry it through NTtD by drawing everything together to be about James, rather than James-saves-the-world.
Spoiler:  (click to show)
Having Bond die in the end of NTtD is wildly, remarkably indulgent, and makes it appear that the 007 mantle, possibly even the "James Bond" name itself is special designation within the service, possibly to explain the generational changes.
IIRC there is a portrait of a previous "M" in the hall of MI-6, further cementing a history involving Sean Connery's Bond as separate. No one needs that, no one asked for that, and only the most basement-dwelling of nerds will be pleased by this level of canon/lore establishment.

Anyway, I hope they get back to basics.
