I'm not sure if this is a good place to vent about something like this, but anyway.. So I freaking love squirrel girl, she was my comfort character growing up, she was always seen as a joke character and just a fun one at that, beating impossibly strong enemies and having amazing designs through the years, and her fun personality really made me shine with her, and literally have half of my nerd storage space is her merch! I heard she was going to be in Marvel Rivals, and was excited beyond belief as It's been a while since her last appearance. I was a bit 50/50 on her new design since it was a large deviation from the previous, but I now find it pretty cute.
But.. Now, Literally.. Everything about her people make.. Is now porn. Beforehand there was always an odd one out porn image of her sure, but 99% of it was just fans drawing for her for fun! She never had a mass fandom following before, so the majority of the artists I follow only did SFW of her and everything was really fun... I know this is silly to expect different, since it always happens to newer characters, but I think I'm having trouble since this is the first time a character I really love is being seen in a different spot-light compared to her happy appearances of before... Hell, I even thought maybe BlueSky would have different results but It's just as bad. And it makes me sad. (Vent Over) Thanks anyone who takes the time to read, haha.

The "Velma" thing is just weird to me. Not the "make porn of female character" because *sigh*, but rather this character in specific? Maybe it speaks to a need for normal-attractive characters rather than supermodels? Even so, the sheer volume of Velma art I never needed to see is just way outside of expectations.

Note- I learned this during the Velma HBO show, back when Twitter was usable and I was curious about people's reactions to it. I expected some of that type of art because Twitter, but not greater than 50% of all posts.

Sad to hear it happening with Squirrel Girl. "Reasonable character in reasonable outfit" (comics, I'd have to look up the Marvel Rivals design) shouldn't have that volume of crap shoveled its way. On the plus side, Ryan North will be writing her again in the big Doom crossover this coming year, so that's something to look forward to.

Games have definitely not gotten better, that's not it. Maybe some however-perceived "average" has gotten better, but not the top space where this increase of the scores has been happening. Tbh, and I've seen this on plenty occasions this year again, a lot of the time scores feel like they're separate from the game's actual quality and more about the critic's push/intention/strife. At least that's my strong opinion when a game like Metaphor gets to a 95% average. There's something else going on. What, I can't even think of, but it's not about the quality of the game alone.

We've had the same issue in the past, too, but it happened less often, mostly with a few big franchises and Nintendo-games. I remember when I was a writer for a webiste and I wanted to give a Zelda-game below 90%. Became a huge argument and it marked the beginning of my end at that website as a writer, because I found ridiculous that, despite mentioning all sorts of criticism, I was supposed to okay a 90% score. And this has somehow become the norm, except everyone gets to do it now, because every game is loved by someone, sigh.

I have to say, with how those sites usually operate the person that likes a type of game/genre the most gets to do the review.
So you do get heavily inflated review scores for RPGs from people that like to play them.

When I was still writing for a site, we would mix that up at times. So me as someone who never played sports games got to review FIFA and instead of our female wholesome gamer some dude that only played action games got to review Hello Kitty. Those reviews were kind of hilarious but the publishers did ask us to cut it out after a while, which we never did.

The publisher that liked us the best was SEGA because I would always heavily inflate the review scores for Sonic games to troll people but they never caught on to that. We would do the same for Ubisoft but that was because the Ubisoft guys liked to smoke weed with our editor in chief backstage at launch events. The other outlets were always angry that he was invited by default and got 'exclusive interviews' because a lot of those games didn't even launch on Nintendo platforms.

Yes, I think I would have probably finished it around release but life got in the way, I tried going back to it a few times and bounced but I managed to power through the back half of the game over Xmas. It starts out bad and kinda tedious, the combat never really stops sucking and the story is half total nonsense half interesting pseudo-fact dropping about evolutionary biology and the geological record.

Delivering stuff does become compulsive the more time you spend with the game. Mechanically it's just as good as MGSV, aside from the combat which is seemingly shit on purpose to get you to avoid it for thematic reasons.

There are two good reasons to play it and finish it. 

1. It looks really good all of the time, still one of the best looking vidya
2. It is original in the truest sense of the word, there is nothing quite like it.
