It probably has to do with the fact that the comic has been used on Resetera as a way to shut down all reasonable criticism. Resetera complains about something, someone brings up a good point (i.e "why are you bitching about this but you praise this same thing"), they post the comic or reference "sea lioning", and then the user accused of sea lioning gets a ban.

The first time I've seen it was in the "why women criticize" thread, with someone bringing up a good counterpoint, and then someone posting that comic to dismiss all criticism, which got the user banned because of course.

I don't know what to tell you. I live in Jakarta all my life. It's very much still frowned upon, though the younger generations are becoming more open to it. But it's still largely met with derision or disbelief. No, there's no sense of trying to salvage things between she and I back at all on my part. It's over. I had a hard time not reaching out to her out of a misguided sense of guilt and responsibility. There's nothing I can do, but I was still feeling like I have to help her fix it somehow. It didn't help that her roommate (who knew about us from her but not how far it went) messaged me during all this telling me off and saying I need to take responsibility for whatever happens.

She's married, with a husband, with a 4 year old child, and has a roommate? What the fuck is going on over there?
