The issue I took with is that it presented modern day Mexico as this lawless land run by drug cartels. There are plenty of other pieces of media that depict that. I guess I came to this movie expecting something more, especially with all the buzz it was getting. I was expecting a celebration of Mexico in some way, but instead it was the same old tropes about drug cartels and drug lords. That part of it just felt very undercooked, especially when the film itself is this ambitious musical/crime drama hybrid? I just thought it would do better than all the other Narcos, Sicarios, what have you's of the world.

Thanks, I see. So it's because the setting of the movie is talking about some old and tired cliches, that's what doesn't sit well with some people. That, and the kind of linguistic aberrations Fj0823 is talking about, which probably made the situation worse.

That said, giving how a lot of people are trying very hard on social media to dictate how we should think about the movie (and are treating everyone concerned as a monolith – and I know for a fact opinions about this movie isn't as unanimous) I'm still questioning why this one particular movie triggered such a social media backlash.

Especially with all the good the movie brings to the table (I personnaly was very moved because of what the movie has to say about sisterhood). And I'm not accusing anyone here at all, please don't get me wrong, but I'm thinking about the word "transphobia" quite often reading some comments.
