I'm gonna be real, we're happy we can finally do it. I've been trying to get people to stop using it as a source for years now. I've made threads about how bad it's getting, about how some of the fastest growing accounts are literally just Nazis, only for them to get trolled. At one point we literally had to issue a staff post in the Musk thread to stop posters from attacking people who left Twitter for other sites. Yes, there's technical issues that need overcoming, but I'm happy we can finally ask our tech team to tackle them and I'm not the only one on staff who feels that way.

Don't mistake my wanting to maintain the past with a hesitance to do it. A bunch of us have been wanting to for a long time

We all need to stop trying to shame each other for what social media platform they choose to use.

Despite what people might think, none of these social media platforms are innocent when it comes to causing harm to marginalized people in the real world. Twitter has helped give rise to the alt right and gamergate, Facebook has had an indirect hand in advancing the Rohingya genocide, TikTok has had a hand in helping cover up the Uhygur genocide, Instagram has done untold damage to the mental health of young women, Youtube has help to radicalize countless people toward bigotry and violence through the use of its algorithm, and all of them have had a hand in the rise of figures like Andrew Tate, Jordan Peterson, and Donald Trump.

None of these platforms or companies are innocent or pure or good. Choosing to use any of these platforms is choosing to use a platform that has had a hand harming the innocent. Standing up on a soapbox and attacking others for their choice in social media platform is silly, petty, and ignores the real harm done by all of them. All you accomplish in doing so is feeling better about yourself and starting a pointless fight with others.

We can be better than this. Life is short and for some it can be hard to find a community with which to belong. Social media platforms can allow for these communities to grow and flourish, giving people a connection they might not have been able to make in the real world. Whichever one of these you use, there's real problems but there are also real benefits.

Besides, it's not like anyone is talking about using TruthSocial or Parler.

I've grown to truly despise Twitter. While all social media is to blame to a certain extent, I believe with it's simplicity an ease of access, it's absolutely abhorrent moderation especially considering it's responsibility at this point, it's utility in empowering an uniting hate groups as well as spread false information through these groups or fucking bots, and it's overall ability to just straight up invade people's lives, ect, Twitter more than any other platform has altered our landscape for the worse and continues to do so.

I will not disregard the good that has came from it. Important and necessary movements such as #MeToo wouldn't have had nearly the megaphone it desperately needed without Twitter for instance. And with it's incredible ability for outreach to nearly anyone on the planet, awesome connections can be formed. But when it's all said and done, I do not feel as though it's scales balance in good's favor. I believe the opposite.

It baffles me nearly on a daily basis how so many people still support this platform, empowering it further. Even more so that so many people seem to think they have to. Like, Twitter is a way of life now. Major government agencies release major news through Twitter. Majorly influential people buy into Twitter knowing full well that one misconstrued tweet could ruin their careers (some, albeit, are deserved). I don't fucking understand.

And of course, the fucking massive elephant in the room. Garbage in Chief, Trump. Who received a MASSIVE outreach boost and still does thanks to Twitter and them not giving a rats-ass that the most powerful man in the world is using their platform to spread hate and misinformation as far as he can every single day. There's just way too much to go into there, so I'll just leave most of that for the thread itself. I'll just say that I truly think that him being in office has a lot to do with the platform and the outreach it gave him. In my mind, there's a strong possibility we could have avoided these past few horrible years of him in office if it wasn't for Twitter.

I am not here to judge. These are my opinions. I just want to see some honest results and discussion. Why are you still using and supporting this platform if you are?
