This is an aside, I think, but whenever I use my PC for intensive non-Gamer tasks, the power draw and fans go nuts. There’s a lot of power in reserve when you’re fragging noobs and typing esoteric slurs. Trying to convert videos to h265? Suddenly you’re hitting the limits of what it can handle.

There's a lot of modern games that use so little CPU that I've done both at the same time quite often. Handbrake eats up the CPU and the game uses up the GPU. I found that what actually becomes the real bottleneck is if the hard drives that one (or both) is using isn't a SSD. Throw in a torrent downloading at max speeds fast enough to a HDD (especially if it's the same one Handbrake is using) and you can really watch things grind to a halt filling all da pipes.  

Of course, by default you can do the game/convert thing because Handbrake's priority is set to Below Normal so the CPU will prioritize the game if it needs anything.

The problem is that I'm moving soon and due to logistics and the nature of my job and hobbies, I can't just use integrated graphics for too long, and my card sold very quickly for $2400 but I couldn't get anything within the next week that wasn't a scam for under $2000 for the 5080 or otherwise that intersected all this scenario and wasn't a complete downgrade. And I missed 5090 completely and can only afford the baseline 5090 which is not gonna be in stock anytime soon.

Hmmm that's what I explained though--I don't have time to go a month without a GPU so I was willing to settle for what I could get, as my 4090 already rapidly sold for way more than I expected. But I can't do the trade now because it would cause me to be at the mercy of this marketplace without a GPU. 5090s are not gonna be readily in stock any time soon so I'll just avoid this gen of GPUs and wait for the 60-series, maybe. 2 weeks without my GPU is probably too long and then I move and I'll risk shit getting lost in all that commotion.

My dad has prostate cancer, and he’s been through I think 3 different treatments, all of which did essentially nothing to slow it down, giving him probably less than a year. The doctors then suggested radiation infusions, where they inject radioactive materials into the most cancerous areas of his body, hoping it would kill the cancer faster than it would kill him. He was supposed to do 6 infusions spaced out by 1.5 months between each, but after the first infusion, it made him so sick that he thought he might not do any more. Then, a month later, he got the following chart:



He decided to keep going, and the second infusion knocked it down to 6. So now he both dreads but is also excited for each infusion.

Why am I bringing this up here? Well, first, because I’m really excited for him finally getting some good results, so it feels good to share it, and this thread is where you guys are. It’s seemed hopeless for a while until this result. And second, my excuse for sharing it in this thread is because I think it’s an analogy that helps me understand some people better.

Leftist anti-free-speech-and-deny-reality-to-mutilate-kids culture has been a growing cancer. Washington helped it grow. So voters decided to inject horrendous radiation (Trump) into Washington, knowing full well he’s an extremely radioactive man that destroys indiscriminately, including perfectly healthy cells. This trade war is utterly stupid. Sure, some Trumpers agree with and defend everything he does, but I think the people who voted him in by and large see it’s stupid and are just hoping he kills the cancer faster than he kills the country.

Now, personally, I couldn’t rule out that Trump would do something inhumane to illegal immigrants, or start an insane war, and I didn’t want that on my conscience if he did, so I didn’t vote for him, but I also couldn’t vote for the cancer, so I voted third party like a coward. But I get why he was voted in. We are immediately feeling the negative effects of the infusion, we’re feeling very sick, and now his (sane) voters are just hoping that the bad collateral damage he’s doing right now will be offset in the end by the good of killing off the cancer that was festering in the U.S. Gov’t.

Anyway, I'm happy for my dad.
