I dunno, I think the Jamie Dimon thing is...not that bad? At the start it just sounds more like razzing than some righteous condemnation.
"You're fucking around on your phone, you're giggling with your friends...you know you are, don't try to lie!" I think he's totally right. And I'm just a mook who would lose my WFH privileges if he got his way, but I think there's something to be said about how simple honesty about work has just evaporated in the past few years. "I have to WFH"...no you don't, you just like to punctuate your emails with a wank sesh. "My email job is so demanding" no it isn't! I work here doing the same stupid pretend job you do! Since I'm on my soapbox, I just think there is something "semi-diseased" (to borrow Dimon's phrase) about middle class work in general, in the US at least. I'm grateful for the benefits I get from my own position, but it seems like there's this sort of...unwritten shared agreement among people in this class to characterize this kind of work as something other than it is. It's kind of disturbing.

I wasn't going to say anything because I'm just an old man but I agree with the jpmorgan guy. If you think you get the same amount of effort with a guy sitting at home in his pajamas versus the guy that's got to come into the office, I don't know what to tell you.
I wish I could have done my jobs from home too. But I actually had a "real job" You know, one where I had to get dressed or put on a uniform, drive to it and actually work. And not work a little bit, jerk off, get on my phone, sext with my girl, peruse the internet, read Bire/Era and order Doordash right to my fat ass. Yeah all you kids can fuck off ![]() ![]() ![]()

Counterpoint: the people in my experience most against any kind of WFH policy are the middle management types whose job relies on making the people above them think they are indispensable in making the people under them get shit done, when WFH proves absolutely that grown up professionals who know what they need to do are capable of doing that themselves and they are at best just relaying information

I think absolutely both things are true. The whole structure is sort of fucked up.
Management: "I need the rank and file in the office to justify my fake do-nothing job!" Staff: "I need to keep working from home so I can spend 30 minutes looking through the snack drawer at my house and posting on The Bire for every 15 minutes of work!"
02-14-2025, 06:45 PM
instead of forcing your subject matter experts to come into kindergarten, how about having an apocalypse of middle managers who add no value at all?

In my experience, the people most upset about WFH ending or being limited are the ones who do fuck all and are never available when you need them. I know it's never going to happen, but if you enforced camera on all the time WFH then that would really put the cat amongst the pigeons. Imagine the uproar if someone did impose that? But what's the difference? In the office you're always visible, so why would people object to always being visible while WFH? ![]()

Actually scratch that...even harder, and 1000 times more effective! And my god, the team bonding, phew...we're closer than ever and engaged on such a human level now!" Just admitting that it's cozy and we don't have to drive and and that work is lame at least has some principle behind it. And I think it is sincerely more defensible.

Elon fathered another child but this thread is a better fit for this commentary.
To fix the birthrate issue Musk should tell us his secret. Other dudes have money but they don't breed 26 year olds at 53. Yet the dynamic kind of makes sense in modern society with highly independent women uninterested in having a man around all the time, let alone a boy her age without the same grit and ambition. These are not the classic broke, desperate, dumped single moms of old. At the same time older guys with a grand vision do want children and families but don't want to deal with the insignificant day to day errands. But these are not the type of 'daddies' that freak out, demand abortions or break it off if they find out she wants a child. Ashley posted something about Elon being the greatest war general of our time last year and this is indeed close to how it worked in the Roman and Ottoman empires when generals took on wives and harems in between wars. And while many see those as mysoginist male dominated societies there is an argument that they weren't. Women often held high political positions and managed staff, supplies, trade, taxation and properties. And in terms of loyalty even if the men were out looting, fighting, hunting and yes enjoying the spoils of their conquest, they would always return home even if they knew their wives weren't waiting for months and had flings at court too. The strange thing is that these societies are also seen as 'conservative' but don't fit the classic marriage model at all. I think there is a lot of taboos that need revisiting and that would lift a burden for both fit independent young women and healthy succesful men.

I think they see Elon as having good genetics and it’s a designer baby type deal with them. It’s debatable. The guy was balding in his 20s. But it’s not uncommon. Happens with a lot of athletes. There are services (and apps?) that are out of gattaca. It’s…not for me to judge. I will anyway. Weird!
