What's so silly about that thread to me is that they lean on identity politics like it's some kind of solid justification for uncompromising purity politics, without realizing that it actually makes them look double plus extra ignorant.

I'm sure they all have heard of the civil war, but do they actually know anything about it? The strange bedfellows and walking contradictions that animated that whole era would make these people's heads explode.

The terrible voice for Naoe aside: I thought the world had agreed that upon that giving "foreign" people an accent when the game/movie takes place IN these "foreign" (putting that in quotation marks, because they're actually not foreign in the context) environments is racist?! If you had the stereotypical "white savior"-setting where Japanese people talk in broken English to the American hero, then it'd make sense. But this game features Japanese heroes who grew up in Japan, who ALL speak Japanese. So when you turn them into English-speakers, it then becomes their regular language, so they wouldn't have that accent.

Really don't like this decision of Ubisoft here.

OP you're asking a question that ultimately strikes at the heart of this community's ethos that has existed since at least 2014 when things shifted pretty considerably in light of Gamergate (along with broader trends in Millennial aged social media discourse about the same time).

Been here since 2009 and I don't remember the exact date when Evilore posted the "this is a safe space" staff message but that was the line of demarcation for this community that bridged the gap between the South Park like attitude of the 00s and the new internet of call out culture with a progressive focus.

Anyway the point being that if you're looking for people to say some or all of the following things should be okay so we can build a coalition:

Chick fil a/Harry Potter/the latest target of ire
Excluding trans people from sports
Overlooking Palestinian genocide

You're not going to get that traction here. The discussion is a non-starter and you're just going to get people yelling at you or each other. The appetite for compromise is less than zero because you're asking people to compromise on their own human rights.

More broadly to answer your question, the right doesn't have these inherent structural issues and it really sucks that they have such an advantage. But there's no way for the Democrats to chase after the middle without depressing turnout from the left because so many of the left's issues are wedge issues. The Democratic coalition is basically a big tent party with a sea of wedge issues.

Our electoral system doesn't truly allow for more than two parties which is the real problem. Leftists, liberals, and moderates are likely three parties among themselves.
