I imagine this will be done within a year. We are pretty good at taking stuff from others, and I don't think there will be a single American life lost. It's just going to happen.

I've been in a relationship for five years now that has had its ups and downs, partially due to how my fiancé handles arguments, and I really need an outsider perspective. My friends are very supportive and willing to talk things out with me, but sometimes I feel like they're too worried about possibly upsetting me or affecting the relationship, so I came here. I'll explain the most recent example of the issues I'm having.

We recently watched the series "Adolescence" on Netflix about the effects of things like the manosphere and incel culture on young people consuming social media content, and how it can translate into real-world violence. Right after finishing the mini-series, we had a thoughtful discussion about the characters in it, the displays of toxic masculinity, and the emotional and social nuances at play. About a week later in the morning I was laying in bed with her and mentioned how the fact that we never got to see the victim's point of view or any members of her family in the series was weighing heavily on me. My fiancé was a bit terse in her responses, clearly getting upset by the whole conversation, but agreed that it was awful and realistic how the series focused on the male perpetrator instead of the female victim.

A few minutes later when I was at my desk working remote for the day, she came and said she wanted to talk to me and apologized for being harsh in that earlier conversation with her tone. We then had a conversation about how previous experiences with fear of men getting aggressive or subtly intimidating her when she had to turn them down made the whole thing a touchy topic. She also hated that there was a wider conversation in society about it, acting like violence against women hasn't always been a problem and focusing on the "suffering" of young single men. I made it clear to her that I had no empathy for incel culture/the manosphere and only gave it any attention for critiquing after it became a significant problem that needed to be dealt with. She then, out of the blue, accused me of defending them for giving the problem serious thought and looking at what made it different from older forms of male chauvinism/toxic masculinity.

I agreed to drop any future discussion of these topics, and she thanked me for that, but admitted I was hurt by her thinking I was defending incels and their ideology in any way even though I explicitly stated I had no empathy for them. We even both agreed that I rarely bring it up outside of the conversations related to the series and one other time that I watched an F.D. Signifier video essay about the issue. She then admitted that what I was saying wasn't defending them but "it came off that way." We got into a further argument where she emphatically stated that I "had an interest in it" and refused any kind of apology for offending me. She went from admitting that I rarely bring it up to saying I "always talk about it" and that watching that video essay shows that I look stuff like that up, like my YouTube algorithm is set up to feed me manosphere content. When I tried to explain that I already followed F.D. Signifier for discussion of other leftist topics and that's why I would be aware of it she shut down and refused to listen to me "explain myself."

By the end it devolved into her stating that she was worried I might be an incel because I had taken a break from dating for a few years after college while living at home to get my life together even though I didn't show any signs of believing that stuff. She also said I shouldn't be offended by what she said because I know I'm not an incel and "that should be good enough." She's now mad that I was offended by what she said, and says she "needs space" and is being generally cold towards me.

Throughout the relationship these have been common themes. If I try to explain myself when she misunderstands something about me I'm "being defensive" and she sees it as an admission of guilt. If her feelings make her believe something hurtful about me she refuses to apologize because "that's how I was feeling and I'm not gonna apologize for my emotions." And any attempts to give my side of things can always be shut down with "I don't want to hear it" if she's getting fed up, regardless of whether my perspective would be useful in the discussion.

I'm sorry for the essay, but stuff like this makes me wonder if this will actually be a happy marriage for me. I've told her before that if she doesn't see a professional about her anger issues I would call things off, and she said she would see a psychologist about it, but that was two months ago and it doesn't seem like she made any effort towards that.

TL;DR: Fiancé got mad when discussing Adolescence and incel/manosphere culture. Accused me of defending it for taking time to learn how bad the problem has gotten and watching content creators that critique and fight it. Shut down any attempts to defend myself or explain what was being misunderstood. Having this happen throughout the relationship, and her general anger issues, is making me question whether I want to get married.

I checked to confirm but don't want to read this thread. The professor is Jason Stanley, who doesn't "study" fascism and never has, his book about it never even went into historical fascism at all. He thinks "fascism" is when you say other people are bad, which means he's a fascist. I envy the Palestinians. Not for what they’re going through, obviously, but for what they have. Their supremely authentic culture, with its deep roots and ancient connection to the land.

One of the very, very few good things that the Gaza holocaust has brought into this world is a deluge of footage of Palestinians living their lives, interacting with each other and relating to their loved ones as they find ways to get by in this nightmare. Westerners like me have been quietly watching these video clips on our little screens in our homes, and watching the various films, documentaries and shows that have been made about Palestinian life over the years, and taking it all in.

And it’s just so very moving. Palestinians are such amazingly beautiful people. How tender they are with each other. How real and organic their spirituality is. How deeply they love their culture in all its unique expressions. How profoundly intimate their connections with each other are, both between individuals and with their community as a whole.

I’m a white Australian. We just don’t experience such things. The indigenous inhabitants of this land were massacred, robbed and displaced just as the Palestinians are today, and my ancestors were brought to this continent from Ireland and Scotland by circumstances beyond their control. Now for the most part it’s just this shallow, vapid civilization whose primary cultural identity consists of not getting too worked up about things. We live with this perpetual vague state of alienation and dysphoria buzzing in the background of our consciousness, because we have no roots here.

And then they look over at the people who were living there before them with their deep roots and vibrant authenticity, and they feel envy. And their envy turns to spite. And their spite turns to hate. And their hate turns to genocide.

There are other reasons for the hatred Israelis feel toward Palestinians, to be sure — the entire apartheid state depends on their being aggressively indoctrinated into viewing the lower-tiered inhabitants of the land as less than human. But jealousy surely plays a part.

And I hope they don’t succeed in wiping out the Palestinians. I hope they don’t succeed in driving them off their land. It would be such a loss to the whole world for a thing of such beauty to be snapped from its roots and cast into the dustbin of history. Apart from all the other reasons to feel heartbroken about the abuses we are witnessing in Gaza and the West Bank, there’s the fact that our world is losing one of the most breathtakingly beautiful things it has ever birthed into existence.

If these freaks succeed in stomping out Palestine, I think it will genuinely feel like losing a loved one. I think many people around the world will feel the same way.

I desperately hope this doesn’t happen. If I were a different sort of person with a different sort of spirituality, I would say I pray this doesn’t happen. In a world that’s increasingly fake and fraudulent, we can’t afford to lose Palestine.
