Absolutely. I live in Canada, where it happens all the time. My local news ran a story a little while ago about the police blowing up a migrant sex trafficking ring to rescue the women inside. What they actually did was deported a bunch of women doing consensual sex work.

As I looked into her cold, coked out eyes, peering through the paper bag that was her mask of make up, I knew that this was more than just a transactional relationship, even though her business manager had made it very clear I had to pay up front or get my fucking knees capped; this was very very consensual, if anything she probably would have paid me if given the chance.

The thing is, it's fair to apply the whole thing with more nuance. Like for example I don't see a good reason why you'd ban trans men from competing in the men's team (as some of the recent legislation apparently do)but it's not like the pro trans brigade applies any nuance themselves. How often have we seen them arguing there is no difference at all between men and women, or that there's nothing suspicious about a male swimmer who ranked in the 400s of men is suddenly one of the top female swimmers, or them not giving a rats ass about what the female athletes think about it

Hi Alyssa, sorry that I didn't respond to this last week. I really only look at ResetEra very briefly like once or twice per week these days.

I read your reply to the other commenter speaking about your experiences. I'm not going to pretend to understand half of what you've gone through, but I hope you trust me when I say that I'm glad you're still here. Even if there were times when you weren't glad to be here, right now, I am glad that you are.

I never stated that someone committing suicide is something to look down on, so I'm not sure where you got that idea. This isn't about the morality of someone's choice to die, it's about power imbalances and informed consent. For the many reasons why we apply age restrictions on things such as the right to vote, work, sex, etc., we recognise that people below a certain age are inherently vulnerable due to the power imbalances they face against adults. Additionally, on a plain scientific level, a child's brain has not fully developed to be able to make certain decisions with the same understanding of long-term consequences. That's not "something to look down on", it's a simple fact.

Ellie was too young to be able to consent to something like that. She was a traumatised, depressed 14 year old experiencing multiple griefs, immense survivor's guilt as well as the pressure of potentially being the world's saviour. She had a right to want to die. That is more than understandable considering everything she had gone through. But those reasons also only add to the fact that she was no in any position to provide informed consent. And no adult had the right to help her die. No adult had the right to abuse the power imbalance they held over her to exploit her vulnerability for her own gains, regardless of how noble those gains were.

There's a reason why the Fireflies ran their tests and were going to begin the procedure that would kill her before she was even conscious. They weren't interested in her consent, because they knew it would be meaningless. There's a reason why they refused to let Joel speak to her, because he was the closest thing to a guardian she had at that stage, whether deserved or not, and they didn't want to risk the chance that she might not provide consent once she had spoken to him.

That doesn't mean that Joel killing the people he did and lying to Ellie was inherently right. It doesn't mean the Fireflies' cause to find a cure wasn't noble or "right". It doesn't mean Ellie's desire to die wasn't understandable. Those are the inherent moral dilemmas the game is asking us to wrestle with. It isn't just about saving one life vs. saving the world. It isn't just about Joel's admirable selfishness vs. the Fireflies' noble but uncomfortable pragmatism. Those kinds of takes are reductionist. It's about two grieving people suffering from survivor's guilt who develop a close bond and the very real but very ugly ways that manifests.

There is no clean and easy answer to what Joel should have done, because it isn't a clean and easy world that they are living in, and it sure as hell wasn't a clean and easy situation the characters were presented with. We can simultaneously think Joel is a shitdick AND recognise his actions as both understandable and justified. We can simultaneously think the Fireflies are shitdicks AND recognise the greater good of what they were trying to achieve. We can simultaneously recognise Ellie's justified desire to die AND recognise that she was in no position to provide anything even closely resembling informed consent.
