This is what's hilarious. I've been there as a kid with an Atari 2600, NES, SNES etc all the way through. This shit has never been a cheap hobby and paying AU$100 for a game in the 90s was not the same as paying AU$100 for a game in 2025.

Nintendo has a really rare chance to have possibly the strongest console launch ever.

People are worried about the economy and take less vacations - they buy a Switch 2.
People are worried price will go up later - they buy a Switch 2.
People are more aware of Switch 2 than any marketing could have ever done - so they buy a Switch 2.

And people will now FOMO for Switch 2, as well.

ALL THE WHILE, Nintendo can absolutely pump US soil with inventory to make first year sales hyper strong, setting the rest of the gen up for huge success with an incredible user-population from day one.

If pre-orders are as strong as I think they could be, I could see inventory diverting from other countries toward the US (wow, what a script flip from yesterday) which sucks ass for others and is woefully unfair; but couldn't blame the business for doing it.

Yep and in times of huge turmoil, people turn to escapism more. Animal Crossing has always been big but it was enormous due to COVID keeping everyone locked down. In times of huge uncertainty, many gamers are going to want to lock down their console purchase so they can just bunker down and having something fun to enjoy on the daily while limiting big purchases thereafter.

I think you might be misjudging where people's priorities are at in general.

It's been proven again and again that escapism is a primary focus for a population in times of uncertainty. Look @ Animal Crossing sales during COVID for a hyper relevant and recent example.
