this is of course entirely self-indulgent and masturbatory, but I also find these posts to be actually decent refreshers including a lot of context I had forgotten

Smash Bros Sakurai tweeted out a pic of Rodin from Bayonetta getting sprayed by water from Mario and this mirrors the cops hosing down black protestors during civil rights, which made many people very upset and reignited Smash Bros-related racial tensions

Sept 20
one of the big ones:

arguments and trolling were happening in the salesera thread, and the mods stepped in with their usual heavy-handedness and started handing out bans without knowing any context or who the trolls really were in this situation. sales master chris1964 was banned for 1 day, but since this guy is venerable and has been quietly doing sales stuff since like 2011 at gaf, this was seen as an insult of the highest order. they also banned a lot of longtime sales members. and cvxfreak was behaving very un-mod-like on discord, talking casually about bans and shutting people up. the community demanded the firing of cvxfreak from modship and development began on a new sales era splinter forum where chris could feel safe.

amongst this, a user was banned for quietly making an anti-nepenthe tweet on their benign nobody account

mods finally claim that they sorted things out and they figured out who the real troll was...except the hot tip they acted on came from a bad faith actor off-site who just wanted to stir up shit and eat popcorn (a minor footnote of the whole debacle which was never acknowledged on era)

then someone came in with receipts from discord showing Morrigan shitting all over the users, and combined with her history of islamophobia on gaf, people started calling for her removal. she resigned with both middle fingers held high but this has not stopped her from continuing to be a massive dick to everyone to this day.

era was like "well what the fuck, you ban a random nobody for a tweet sniping at someone on era, but you won't ban cvx or morrigan for discord sniping at someone on era?" and every mod was like "no no, that was different."

in light of all this, for some reason nintendoera decided they weren't safe anymore with all the mod abuse, and their discord gained 300 members that day. both nintendoera and salesera left and started their own splinter forums:

re: money: resetera mods claim they actually like not being paid, users tell them to have some fucking self respect and dunk on them for days, with surprisingly few bans(?). nepenthe goes absolutely fucking mental and starts demanding tips from users, users who also generate all their content for free and just had all their data sold

December 15, 2020 - the pound sand incident

is there a tldr version of this for people who want to be mildly amused by this shitshow but also don't actually care enough to scroll back a page.

the current drama revolves around the users Sibylus (banned), A.By (angry about the ban) and Poodlestrike (mod who acts like a bish but is treated like a bitch)

Sibylus posted this in the community constructive criticism thread (not visible to users without an era account):

Fuck civility and fuck your approach to managing this place. Until you fundamentally change that, you're going to continue to let us down, drive us away, and be conned by people blowing the slightest whiff of smoke up your asses. Every promise of better has been dashed, and your failures are getting WORSE. Get fucking real, all of you. Or get out of the way.

a week after this post was made, Sibylus was banned with the listed reason "does not want to be here"

which is both not up to the professional level of ban reason standards, and completely true

era users constantly pulling faces saying "I-I almost don't want to post here anymore with all the mistreatment of my group" and for once the mods said



A.By flipped the fuck out and started making threads and spreading the word of the mistreatment of Sibylus who was apparently a member of trans era (uh oh) and pointed out the suspicious nature of this ban happening randomly a week after it was posted like a sort of revenge ban swept under the rug

users started adding "Note: this post critical of the forum is not a request to be banned" as their signatures under every post

A.By continued to hound the mods about the ban in PMs, until the fateful moment:



A.By found this message course and rough and irritating, and while Poodlestrike thought better of it and tried to edit it out, he was too late before it got everywhere

and then the forum was in (minor) open revolt as a bunch of users flipped out on the mods and started posting "POODLESTRIKE RETIRE BITCH," and somewhere in the range of 6 to 9 prominent era members got their sand pounded for harassing the staff, who seemed to suddenly grow a backbone

December 7, 2020 - the Black Chamber incident

Who the fuck is Black Chamber?

in the grand tradition of gaf and era, game OTs are celebrated events that take hundreds of hours to put together full of massive gifs and walls of text (56k warning!)

cac chamber signed up to be the official OT creator for cyberpunk, a prestigious honor which as a total shill for the game he took very seriously

however as we know, cyberpunk is unabashedly transphobic, what with its pr guy who made an attack helicopter joke (the fact he was fired doesn't absolve the company) and its "mix it up" chromanticore in-game ad featuring a woman with what looks like a penis (the LGBT creator who designed it does not speak for all LGBT people)

in spite of months of abuse toward him, cac chamber was always polite, welcoming and kowtowing towards those who wanted his OT shut down, he agreed it should be closed in honor of trans remembrance day and did the dance required of him to show respect for era's outraged communities



finally, the other day people demanded to know whether his OT would feature a statement from the trans members of the site to reinforce that this game was only allowed discussion under protest, and he kept repeating that everyone would be welcome to the thread 💯, though not stating plainly that a statement would be included (it would be, he was already working with the mods on it)

mods defended him, and his politeness and welcoming nature only upset them further

he proposed on his own that he would take a one month ban in order to placate those who were upset...mods didn't want to ban him as he hadn't broken any rules, but he insisted!  which only made them hate him further, as he could just play the game in peace and enjoy it on with the cyberpunk discord, they wouldn't be able to make him flail while he was gone

they dug and kept digging, posting completely reasonable pms he had made, trying to get him got

finally they found a 2-year-old tweet that appeared to be maga-ish, at which point the house of cards tumbled, everyone disavowed him, b-dubs (he of the 5-year-old racist gaf posts) perma'd him and said they would be taking over the OT and was shocked and mortified at what had happened and they would be carefully moderating all discussion of cyberpunk

and now era is rapidly eating itself and witch hunting everyone who looks at them sideways, it's open season on digging up old and off-site bad behavior

 



oh and also kyuuji who spearheads the transphobia lynch mob maneuvered her outrage into a free key of the game, so she will be playing it "just to check out all the transphobia," having played era like a damn fiddle

after all this, Black Chamber did a post-banning post-mortem lap of a few forums (archive), saying hi to those who had been watching events unfold

while eager to stretch his legs out and speak freely for once, it turned out he was of course not guilty of any of the things he'd been accused of, and was in fact just a guy who was really looking forward to cyberpunk, and willing to do whatever was asked of him to design the OT and discuss the game on a video game forum


if he was some spook mastermind, now would be the time to go mask off and reveal his evil trolling and get slapped on the back by his chud buddies, but he was just a (frustrated) fan

his "maga" post had been taken out of context and was intended as "hurr durr this is how you sound republicans," in reality he disliked trump and tried to stay apolitical

he eventually went on to create the cyberpunk OT at d-pad.life and lived happily ever after

I just find the concept of depictions of real people in a video game weird.
It must be bizarre for the computer people in these games to see that, but they don't seem to care. I guess the idea is that they'd look at that like we look at CG or animated depictions of people. But as a real person, it's weird to play a game presenting a CG world, with real people in it. Like...how does that make sense? How do you explain it? How do the characters in this world know what real people look like? Where did they get these photos from? Is Yakuza a parallel dimension to ours? You can travel between them? Who has this technology? Why are they using it to put photos of real porn stars on a wall in a video game?
They should put some kind of filter on those photos to make them look like they belong in a CG world.
Otherwise my brain just starts dipping down that rabbit hole.

I did this in 2011 after nearly 6 years of being treated so poorly at Kroger (I stayed because of the benefits). That environment was all about management bullying staff and in some cases doing it in-front of customers. So, one day I snapped, got on the intercom and said (I shit-you not), "I'm a wild turkey!" and proceeded to make a ton of gobbling noises. I walked out and flipped off my Supervisor while walking past them, as she was the one trying to mess with me in-front of customers. The reason I did the turkey was because I was known as the guy who did all of the intercom announcements for the Meat & Seafood Dept., and my turkey gobbles were a common thing around Thanksgiving every year. Looking back at it, I am still proud that I let that abusive environment.

Because right now, and I'm aware this isn't something a lot of people want to hear, but our staff team is wearing thin. Most of us are exhausted, mentally, emotionally, simply because this job, in essence just is. We are often confronted to the worse this forum has to offer, on a daily basis, and it takes a toll on us all sooner or later. I remember someone in a post mentioning the fact that we have to take the higher ground and be willing to take any kind of criticism at all times, and that's generally the mindset I'm coming from indeed. However, that also generally leaves me drained, with poor mental-health, and needing regular breaks from moderating (or from even interacting with the forum as a whole) just to recenter myself and feel good enough again. This is, in big part, the reason of our staff turn-over. People get burned out doing this, and end up leaving because they couldn't handle it anymore. This is how we lost many of our minority mods as well (because the mental and emotional toll on us is very often THAT much bigger than for the rest of the team), who often are extremely difficult, if not impossible, to replace. I myself have already thought about quitting the staff team half a dozen times in less than a year already. The apparently common sentiment that mods are easily recruited, and that they easily agree to become staff, and dedicate their time and energy to this forum, is sadly far from our actual reality, and the reason why it makes any single departure that much harder to handle.

I was staff here for eighteen months. In that time I had to try to become an expert on criminal cases with no clear conclusions, on controversies in every industry, on cultural expectations across different continents, on major historical events I'd not heard of previously, on personalities I didn't follow, and on geopolitical conflicts nobody has ever solved. People have this image of free-wheeling or rogue moderators who just moderate in accordance of their opinions. But I had to get so far in to complex situations and process so much information and perspective that I don't even have my own opinion on some things anymore.

The decision below is significant, because the Judge refused to go along with different rules for different people, and disparate treatment and discrimination of a gay man. So Era was generating a cool half million dollars a year in profit? Hope everyone paying for Era Clear reads this.

I understand why there wasn't ever transparency about the finances of this place before now (and we're only seeing the numbers now because of the press release) but I wonder how previous discussions about moderation and the stress that mods are under as unpaid volunteers would have gone if everyone knew that the site was pulling so much profit.

This is cracking me up. Didn't even know it existed.

This site was clearly making plenty of money from ad revenue alone to cover server costs and then some. So why did Era Clear need to exist other than to line the owner's pockets? Why not just say so instead of floating across some platitude laden bullshit? I'm fine with being a member of a site that's owned by some dude, I've been an SomethingAwful member forever, but at least they are fairly transparent about it. This vague community-centric wording is shady as fuck and exploitative considering the circumstances in which this forum was created.

The issue isn't with the sale itself. But rather the rhetoric behind it, like take Era Clear for example, it was introduced as a way to keep the lights on, and we were told there wasn't enough revenue to pay the mods. But now we find out from another website that the site made 700K a year in ad revenue.

Then, without acknowledging the discussion, the mods sneakily changed the wording on subscription page to "Your support is appreciated"



Some time later, B-dubs finally acknowledged it and basically went... "Oops, we kind of forgot"

About Era Clear, it was offered early on when the site was new and ad revenue was just getting off the ground. The only time it was given any real push was after the 2.0 redesign, which cost a lot and I recall the hope was that subscriptions could help offset that, so the plug was added at the bottom of the site. After that it kind of became an afterthought and went untouched until now.

Honestly I don't think anyone remembered the wording on the subscription page and that was definitely a mistake and should have been changed. It's been adjusted.

I remember this! I just kind of want to tap them on the shoulder and be like "Hey, if you're as progressive as you say you are, you're for universal healthcare, right? Any idea what 'universal' means, and where that money comes from?"
