‘A sense of betrayal’: liberal dismay as Muslim-led US city bans Pride flags

"Many liberals celebrated when Hamtramck, Michigan, elected a Muslim-majority council in 2015 but a vote to exclude LGBTQ+ flags from city property has soured relations"

Quote:In 2015, many liberal residents in Hamtramck, Michigan, celebrated as their city attracted international attention for becoming the first in the United States to elect a Muslim-majority city council.

They viewed the power shift and diversity as a symbolic but meaningful rebuke of the Islamophobic rhetoric that was a central theme of then Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump’s campaign.
This week many of those same residents watched in dismay as a now fully Muslim and socially conservative city council passed legislation banning Pride flags from being flown on city property that had – like many others being flown around the country – been intended to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community.

Muslim residents packing city hall erupted in cheers after the council’s unanimous vote, and on Hamtramck’s social media pages, the taunting has been relentless: “Fagless City”, read one post, emphasized with emojis of a bicep flexing.

In a tense monologue before the vote, Councilmember Mohammed Hassan shouted his justification at LGBTQ+ supporters: “I’m working for the people, what the majority of the people like.”

While Hamtramck is still viewed as a bastion of multiculturalism, the difficulties of local governance and living among neighbors with different cultural values quickly set in following the 2015 election. Some leaders and residents are now bitter political enemies engaged in a series of often vicious battles over the city’s direction, and the Pride flag controversy represents a crescendo in tension.

“There’s a sense of betrayal,” said the former Hamtramck mayor Karen Majewski, who is Polish American. “We supported you when you were threatened, and now our rights are threatened, and you’re the one doing the threatening.”

Thank you Michigan. Inshallah.

Now let's celebrate the 9/11 deep state hoax with a round of Golf dedicated to the brave Mujahideen that defeated the Russians and NATO and thank the prophet, Jared and Jesus for blessing all this black gold and protecting hot yet properly dressed latina moms and their beautiful children from the Satanic indoctrination of the godless marxists and their disgusting flags and horrible drugs. Go out and vote and we will make Disney do Alladin 2 with a real female princess instead of all this woke haram nonsense. Kebabs and diet cokes for everyone

For horseshoe theory aficionados, from the outside looking in all of this seems awfully familiar to the early 2000s Iraq war when you had to proudly display an american flag or you hate america.

Decades of pretending like fundamentalist Christians are the only religion that doesn't condone gay shit will do this to you. Hilarious. There is no betrayal, this is who they always were.

There's this weird liberal obsession with finding new groups of people to be...well, the new black people. A group or demographic that does what you want every 2-4 years, doesn't really focus on anything deemed problematic to you, and who can be activated whenever you want. They've tried it with Hispanics and it's not really working as planned. They're tried it with Asians and affirmative action/racism is getting in the way.

The history and evolution of the black/democrat union is unique and cannot be simply replicated. I have no issue with that union BTW, and think it's a justified partnership. I'm just saying no one else has the historical situation to lead to that again.

The thing about every other immigrant group in America, and every immigrant group in every other country of the world, is that fundamentally they're there because they want to be there; they left somewhere else choosing to do so.

So a sizable chunk of those groups are not thinking "Wow, how things are right now fucking sucks, we need to change things".
They're thinking "I fucking came here because of that, why are you trying to change that?"

Not to mention the role models of muslims abroad are anything but the Martin Luther Kings.
They overwhelmingly support Erdogan and other strong conservative leaders.

They see Democracy as a means to an end or how Erdogan puts it: "Democracy is like a train, once you reach the station you get off".

Support from the liberals shielded them from attacks from the right post 9/11 and during the war on terror and now that the conservative movement has rejected the neocons they are no longer a threat. Also after decades of basically 'no-borders' policies most of the conservatives have accepted the reality that all the migrants are here to stay and after some soul searching the conservatives found out that their values actually aren't that different from the muslims and other migrant groups but radically different from the liberals.

And the liberals don't really have an answer to this, or rather don't want to accept the answer which is the unity that RFK Jr. proposes.

Another Disney bomba. Wild how Pixar has fallen. The funny thing is that their films always had social messages or commentary. There were always "adult" themes or jokes thrown in there; imagine what the "woke" crowd would say about The Incredibles if it came out today. Their films were never straight forward fairy tales, they always explored topics like jealousy and grief and love while subverting expectations. They also didn't shy away from female protagonists. So none of that is the issue.

Ultimately at the heart of all those classic or successful early films was a dedication to telling stories. Creating compelling, multi faceted characters. It really seems like a lot of stuff today has no interest in telling stories or creating multi faceted characters, and instead is focusing on marketing via identity. I'm not saying every diverse story is this. Coco is an amazing movie for instance. I haven't seen Soul but by all accounts it's really good, and it's box office struggles were moreso about covid than anything else. I've got zero issue with gay relationships in kids movies btw but uhhh...isn't Bud Lightyear supposed to be about a toy that came out in the 1990s? Why would the movie the 90s toy is based on have a same sex kiss in that context? Why does Elemental look like a shitty 00s DreamWorks movie, and why are they breathlessly announcing a random character is queer? It's as if they're making uncompelling, poorly written #content and deciding the best way to build buzz or an audience is to add some #diversity to it.

Even the target audiences realize how cynical this is, and how there's little real effort into telling diverse stories. It's solely marketing. Sometimes it works. Lords knows I thought Little Mermaid would flop but it's clearly a success. Usually it fails tho.

The little Mermaid actually did kind of flop. It did really well in the US but with a total box office of 468 million and a budget of 250 million it may have not even broken even. (rule of thumb is usually that it needs to make twice the budget to account for marketing)

Oh wow you're right. I glanced at a headline awhile ago that said the WW numbers weren't horrible but assuming it won't have legs much longer...that's gonna be what a 500-600m total gross? Whereas if they had just cast [random white girl singer] it prob does double. And while that says some ehh things about overseas markets at the same time if you're signing the checks how much longer are you gonna go in this direction...

No interest in Reddit at all these days. If a sub hasn't been taken over by the terminally online Reeeeesetera types then it's just a matter of time before it is.

I mean, go to ANY city-based sub and I guarantee that it's been over run by mods who blatantly lean so far left that it's embarrassing.

Fuck that shit.

Have to disagree with you here.

In addition to these remakes being some of the most cynical cash-grabs ever made, trying to jam the casting down everyone's throat with the massive PR campaign really put the focus on how this was offering nothing EXCEPT for the casting choice.

That's what they don't get. Focus on the fact that you've cast a real talent in the role and how this is going to give viewers something new and fresh and most people don't give a fuck.

I mean... if you watched a Bollywood film how much of a fuck would you give if the lead was a dalit?
It would be hugely contentious within India, and absolutely a political statement, but to a western audience? No1curr

I agree they're cynical cash grabs but Lion King and Aladdin both grossed over a billion dollars. There's a clear demand for this trash, and it's looking like this one will only do about half of what the others did. There's gotta be a reason for that.

They say she was the best person who auditioned. I'm sure that's the case when it comes to singing, since she's one of the best young vocalists in the US. But I doubt she was the best actress, given her limited experience in that realm. The weird thing to me is that Disney already has a black princess and while the Princes & The Frog wasn't great it's prob the best fit for film adaption compared to the other ones.
