What amuses me about those kinds of posts that you always see is that they aren't communism, if anything they're closer to capitalism but without icky money changing hands.

Communism is centralized planning, production and distribution. Individuals acting on their own don't get to choose if they get, make or give glasses or toothpaste or whatever else. (That's assuming the necessary materials for these things haven't already been planned away, which is why central planning always leads to shortages.)

You know what would make communism work better? Some sort of central intelligence that could understand demand and assign resources to satisfy that need quickly and efficiently.

Some sort of artificial intelligence...I wonder how all the online communists feel about AI?

As I recall from the Adam Curtis documentary part of why the USSR collapsed was the "Intensification 90" program. It was a new policy that replaced the prediction work that had mostly been done with pen and paper with computed calculations. They would feed the computer all the data on floppy disks and it would provide the optimal numbers (or so the theory was).

One example he gave was a laundromat that had replaced all their machines which had yielded an x-amount of scrap metal but that was also its most efficient year in terms of results that they measured. After analyzing the data the computer concluded that from that point forward the laundromat had to produce the same scrap metal every year to yield the best results. 
So the laundromat had to purchase and store lots of scrap metal to meet those targets. 

Computers were also used at a lower level to "optimize production" but of course only the central planners had the best equipment. Combined with the policy of perestroika desperate Soviets running the factories and production lines eventually started selling valuable Russian property in exchange for dollars on international markets, so they could buy faster foreign computers to make better predictions and calculations.

Well, no, that wouldn't be very different from the Soviet program from the start. All of the data was falsified always because the production wasn't real. The firms introduced forms of capitalism very early on because there was no other way to distribute resources anywhere near accurately, and even the Soviet planners quickly realized they needed to use prices from the capitalist world or the entire thing was impossible.

Ehhhh I dunno.
I can see an AI central planner doing a better job than "the invisible hand of the free market" in that it could potentially do a better job at assessing 'worth' and prioritising accordingly, because lets face it, a lot of CEOs are fucking morons, and a lot of 'market value' is based on purely short term purely financial performance.

A lot of the ways capitalism is broken is because a lot of things don't have their value / cost benefits accurately balanced. Factoring in things like social costs would radically alter pricing structures for all kinds of businesses, and an AI wouldn't have to worry about things like political expediency or NIMBYism to make data driven decisions that are widely beneficial.

Having said that, obvious GIGO, and there's all sorts of caveats to that.
Like, the obvious being data entry clerks mysteriously being valued as the most valuable members of society somehow.

Except it wouldn't be able to determine the "worth" or "value" of anything in the first place. What you're saying is essentially what the socialists like Oskar Lange claimed in the middle of the 20th Century as if the problem was merely the capacity to do the calculations and led to stupid ideas like Project Cybersyn. The problem isn't in the execution of central planning it's inherent in the concept. Even a sufficiency advanced AI would only ever at best know the past data from capitalism but the really fatal thing is still that the labor theory of value is wrong. The entire idea is complete nonsense.
