The app I use, Apollo, has been transparent about interactions with Spez and staff. The new fees were were implemented quickly and have onerous fees attached. It’s clear that Reddit is trying to kill off 3rd party apps. 

They retroactively made exceptions for accessibility focused apps, because they were about to universally destroy access for sight impaired users. 

They could adjust the API to retain advertising even in third party apps. There are options. This is just shortsighted bullshit.

turns out reddit admins are more willing and able to quash this protest than I'd expected

r/interestingasfuck decided to protest by becoming a NSFW sub (technically fine, there are lots of NSFW subs) and inviting users to post lots of porn, because if a bunch of major subs became full of porn the site becomes less marketable in a public IPO

admins kicked all the mods and changed the sub back, and now it's a free-for-all on requests to claim mod positions there (with some users going tongue in cheek and promising they'll respect users' wishes by keeping it full of porn)

r/mildlyinteresting was planning on doing something similar, and the admins cleaned house there too...only to restore them after a few hours, sending them mail to say they'd been caught up in a list of other subs promoting NSFW content (in other words, threatening them)

Their best routine is when they tell you all about how they used to be edgy and racist and homophobic and maybe even a fascist but they have since come to Jesus wokeness and now know better and are trying to get you to understand how you need the Good Word too. They seem to get really mad and insist you're a sinner if you claim that just because they were stupid and easily blindly led by others (and still are apparently) and bigoted and so on that doesn't mean you are. Then you definitely need forced conversion, for your own good. They're just trying to save your soul from eternal damnation, why are you being so difficult? Don't you understand the existential stakes here?

I can't help but notice that most of those titanic posts were at least a week after the incident after some of the facts had come to light, not day-zero lulz, so they did in fact have some concept of 'too soon'.
