Monkey Man 8/10

Really quite good overall, surprised it's had a lukewarm reception

Wicked Little Letters. Fun film based on a real story about a woman accused of sending hate mail to her neighbours in the 1920s. Some good scenes but the best bits are obviously the very sweary letters

I'm willing to give Alien: Romulus a chance, but if they screw this one up it's over.

American Fiction

Different than the trailers made it out to be. They played it like kippendorfs tribe. A farce comedy. But it’s pretty heavy, with a pretty clever conceit. Its own existence almost disproves the message. Except they throw in a twist at the end

Spoiler:  (click to show)
so this clueless director wants to make his “ghetto” book into a movie. Monk, the lead, convinces the director it’s better to make a movie about writing a fake ghetto book. Essentially, making American Fiction. The you’re watching. It says the only reason the movie was made was by tricking a white liberal dummies on Hollywood.

Anyway, Rian Johnson produced this.

Quote:Production issues — ranging from Johnson’s chronic lateness and lack of professionalism on set to producers’ inexperience — caused costs on the movie co-starring Chris Evans and J.K. Simmons to spiral upwards to a final budget over $250 million, a sum more fitting for a superhero tentpole.

Quote:Insiders told TheWrap that Johnson showed up as much as eight hours late to set on the movie — forcing the crew to shoot around him on some days. On previous films, Johnson has made a habit of peeing in a water bottle to save time, upsetting crew members.

Quote:“It was a f–king disaster,” said one insider. On days when Johnson didn’t show up at all the production crew was forced to shoot around him, the insiders added.

Quote:“Hiram still has no idea how to produce,” the top agency insider added. “The only thing he has ever known is how to work for Dwayne. Any time he’s been in a situation where his responsibilities have expanded beyond DJ, he has crumbled.”

Quote:production personnel would repeatedly warn Amazon MGM about impending issues, only to be ignored. “They brushed it away and said ‘We’re going to keep it under control,’ which they didn’t,” said the insider. “How are you going to keep this under control? You’re not. It’s just not how things work.”

Sony wants in on that streaming red ocean?

Sony actually have a better state of things to do that than someone like peacock because a) they've already got an over the air ad supported one in a bunch of territories and b) they already have an online subscription service they can leverage in PS+.

In terms of catalogue, they're obviously still making movies that occasionally people want to watch (sometimes for the wrong reasons), but they're also making a shitload of ongoing TV stuff for existing streamers and probably have a bigger back catalogue than you think if they get all their rights back

I don't

You're right, but streaming is still a massive red ocean and there are going to be some pretty high profile casualties soon.

I watched Unfrosted (the Pop Tarts movie) and it was... pretty, pretty, good?

Its a straight up comedy movie in the way that Hollywood have just stopped making those anymore, and its also pretty all ages in terms of humour, and has some decent bits that are genuinely funny.

There's a lot of referential stuff, but in the good way where if you get the reference it adds an extra layer, and if you don't the bit still works and not in the Family Guy the reference is the entire joke way, and there's a lot of silly absurdist stuff, plus a fucking ton of cameos. Jon Hamm has a particularly great one, and Ol' Billy Burr is great as JFK.

It actually reminded me a lot of Conan O'Brien era Simpsons with the overall tone, not-giving-a-fuck-if-you-get-it-or-not references, generally family friendly humour with a little bit of an undercurrent, and the absurdist / silly stuff.

Funnier than most of Netflix straight-to-netflix comedy movies, and funnier than most kids fare, and doesn't outstay its welcome.

Love lies bleeding was a laugh. It was quite refreshing to see a gay movie that’s not the typical coming out live, love, learn, struggle fest. It’s just 2 women who meet up. One happens to be the angry daughter of a local psycho. The other’s a homeless she hulk. Together they have fun.

Ruby Gillman Teenage Kraken was a really nice kids' movie, especially if you have a tween/teen daughter.

But there he finds other Furyans fighting for their existence against a new monster. And some of these Furyans are more like Riddick than he could have ever imagined.

Me and the three other guys invested in the Riddick franchise are winning

You’d think after the Gollum game bombed this character would be on ice for a while. I guess I just can’t understand the genius of David Zaslav.

So the writers and producer from the LOTR trilogy and Hobbit movies.

I'm cautiously optimistic about this one.

The writers responsible for the worst decisions in the LotR adaptation and for whatever the fuck that was they turned The Hobbit into.

Expect Rings of Power level stupidity.

I still don't understand how Geoff Keighly went from presenting the Bonus Round and being wrong about everything with Michael Pachter to very poorly producing multi million dollar Award shows and gaming events.

Especially since he's such a hack storyteller. He's genuinely shit at it and gets celebrated because he's just slightly less shit than the other hacks in the videogame industry.
