The main issue and something that these companies don't understand, is the bait and switch. They say we're getting the historically accurate Assassins Creed set in Japan we've always wanted but instead we're getting fan fiction from a bunch of weirdos. 

If they would just admit that they're no longer in the hardcore AAAA+ gaming business and instead produce interactive DEI propaganda people would skip and ignore it like most French art and Dustborn. Just put a rainbow sticker on the box, so we know what's what.

Also we're not all "in the same boat". His own ship is sinking but FromSoftware just increased wages by 10%. Space Marine 2 was a big hit. The First Descendant players are looking forward to Ultimate Freya and Dragonball Sparking ZERO is leading the pre-order charts.

It's too funny that it's the monetization director speaking up. The one guy who doesn't actually work on the game to make it more fun but is instead in charge of determining how much money they can squeeze out of the players before they run away. Top Gun Maverick was similar. Maverick’s team was notably diverse and they benched the conventionally attractive white guy for the final mission, and you know people would have gone after it for that if it hadn’t been good, but it was, so no one even mentioned it and the movie made $1.5 billion.

I don't want to dismiss the dude entirely because apparently this guy is very dedicated to studying Tolkien but this feels kind of desperate when it comes from Amazon itself. The argument that there's no canon because Tolkien kept juggling around some alternative ideas towards the end of this life also sounds very flimsy to me.

Also apparently the guy is a consultant on the show but why do you need a consultant when there's no canon?

You can think of the silmarillion as a kind of index of points of order he corrected himself on in his nonsense letters

Also consider that Tolkien was ostensibly a scholar of anglo saxon and nordic literature, the tradition he's writing from has no idea of canon and there are various versions of every story.

this feels like the achilles and the tortoise paradox, where the finish line means "fully established canon" and the argument is that you're always halfway there and never really there

if he had written a later work that said actually he was fred all along, then that would be canon, but he didn't write that, so it's not canon

the answer isn't "there's no canon"

it also doesn't matter what tradition he was writing from because he intended to tell a story about things that happened, not things that may have happened from one point of view

yes the story grew in the telling but (for example) if he had had the foresight to initially write Riddles in the Dark the way he ended up revising it, clearly he would've preferred that option, rather than needing to retcon it

he didn't intentionally write it wrong so he could go back and correct it as a nod to ancient literature
