Nah, 90s and entertainment is a rare case of "everything was better back then". Agreed, OP. Even the shows that I considered "mid" back then, would be top tier compared to nowaday tv shows. Comedy, mystery, scifi, fantasy, cartoons, you name it. Creators were so daring and adventurous. I miss the offensive humor of Al Bundy, I miss watching The Cosby Show as a little white German kid and I miss associating great cartoons with US-shows and not anime.

I can only speak for me but this is the election that broke me. I've been a loyal footsoldier pulling the lever for Team Blue and doing the "lesser of two evils" garbage since I turned 18 in 2004. I was trying very hard to do the same thing again in 2024, despite all the Biden-authored atrocities of the past year. But when your dad calls to tell you that the maronite village your family originally emigrated from has been wiped off the map by US-made bombs, it's a pretty jokerfying experience.

I live in a critical swing state, I early voted for a third party candidate, I have no regrets.

Also +1 that this is not a very safe or welcoming space for arabs and muslims. I've lurked era for years and finally felt compelled to post something because the tone has been so rancid over the past year.

There is a notable rise in extra efforts to categorize pro-Palestinian people in various negative ways pretty much everywhere online right now. It's impossible to miss and it coincided with a particularly violent offensive in the North that the media by and large is ignoring. I'm not saying it's happening here I'm just saying it's happening a lot more everywhere else so it would be welcome if on a progressive forum it was different.

Having a thread like the I/P thread is not a special thing or super admirable. It's the bare minimum. Reddit, Twitter TikTok all have spaces for discussion. It's how the subject is handled outside of the quarantine zone that matters most imo. Shoot getting a month purely based on the most uncharitable perception of him is very disappointing at a time like this to say the least.

It's funny considering everything about Dragon Age has been streamlined for mass appeal while Baldurs Gate 3 is an oldschool, isometric, turnbased, clunky RPG with way too many skills to pick from. (And it's even edgy at times :O)

Though even more damming is perhaps that even Space Marine 2 had a peak of 200k+ players. Currently Dragon Age seems like a very moderate success

Here's what I've seen regarding this subject. I live in CA and my friends from Mexican descent hate the term "Latinx" and a dude I work with who is Costa Rican straight up called out a manager who was just reading a company memo that used the term saying the company was trying to take his identity away and that it was a label created by "white liberals"

Also in my opinion referring to people with terms like "pregnant people" and "unhoused" is just giving ammunition to right wingers and does nothing to actually serve progressive causes.

What it shows is that no one likes language policing scolds especially because [but not limited to the fact that] it doesnt actually address social issues that harm marginalized people

It's unfortunately very easy to sell 'rage' nowadays. People who do not like 'x' series anymore or the new direction a series or games in general are taking (which is valid) are targeted by content creators who create over-reactions meant to resonate with them. Normally someone should just move on or grow "out" of a series (it's ok to let go people...).

But instead people choose 'anger' (thanks algorithms) which becomes a vicious cycle. Big games failing feels to them as if it proves their points and also gives them a sense of power (this is the addiction). Unfortunately the power dynamics of gaming do boil down to sales (capitalism). And reviews/impressions have a very heavy impact on sales.

Their logic is that if enough big games that they do not like fail then big companies will take notice and stop doing that type of game. And unfortunately I do not think this logic is flawed. Do you really think a company like EA won't follow the money?

Given the current political climate in the USA that has pretty much divided the country in two expect review bombing, brigading, over-reactionary videos, misery and doom naysaying to continue, specially in games made by Western companies.

Also avoid the places full of "misery" talk, it's just not worth your time. Cheer up. It'll pass and the world will keep on spinning. The discourse is completely beyond your control so the best you can do is support the stuff you do like, regardless of the "noise".

That's my 2 cents at least.
