And if the franchise looks forward in its canon timeline, all those beloved characters — Luke, Leia, Vader, Obi-Wan, Yoda and Han — are dead or had their storylines wrapped in prequels or spinoffs. Rey, created in the post-Lucas era, is arguably the only entity with currency on the big screen now. "The closet is a little bare," says another source.

If the character Rey is the most coveted character in the franchise you might as well stop making movies. Nothing against Ridley but the character kinda sucks.

Disney is probably banking on the sequels already having developed a nostalgia fandom.

Given the state things, they will have to deal with a massive pushback campaign from the usual suspects as well.

They flubbed her trilogy and failed to give her a satisfactory conclusion, now she's meant to evoke the same passionate fondness and sense of familiarity that Luke and Anakin do for generations of people. It ain't gonna work. Give her a trilogy where she's the main focus and she actually gets a sensical and strong beginning, middle and end, or move on and don't try to gaslight your audience into believing that they have an earned affinity for the character instead of just an affinity for Daisy Ridley.

The real future for the franchise — if there is to be any at all — should come in the form of new characters, in a new timeline, and the Skywalker name should be blown out of a fucking airlock and treated like a dirty word. No more cheap nostalgia porn, no more catering to the most passionate manbabies on the internet, do something fresh and prove that this franchise has more staying power than hackneyed memberberries. If they can't do that, it doesn't deserve to continue.
