I'll be nitpicky, though: calling Metaphor the "smartest, most exciting" game of the year when 1000xRESIST exists -- a game that asks similar questions and then some, then sees them through from start to finish in stunning ways without losing the thread -- seems... less than accurate.

But they are not the same? 

1000xResist sounds more like focusing in abuse, Asian dysphoria  and mommy issues? The sci fi setting being pretty transparently a way to the developer to cry about how they were bullied in highschool and her Asian mom being a bitch? 

And this game did it first a decade ago…

Metaphor is not the smartest written game of the year, but is silly how some at ERA suddenly think empowering and “mister Rogers themes” are below them and not worth anyone time.  

BTW, the best way to make people interested in a depressing and smart indie game is to complain in every AAA game thread about how it got ignored by the plebe.

Metaphor is a great game but it’s not some amazing treatise on statecraft nor is its underlying message remotely ‘liberal democracy is bad’. It will surprise no one to learn that the political philosophy of the game is ultimately the power of friendship.

I’m still not entirely sure what that Alonzo fella was trying to achieve, but perhaps it’s similar to what Nepenthe is advocating after all.

You know what is unironically a well written game? Wu Kong. It’s totally batshit, weirdly translated and it doesn’t make a lick of sense but it stayed weird and unexpected and interesting and good all the way through.

I think it's fair to criticize Veilguard's writing, but saying it's demonstrably worse (or even inconsistent) than past Dragon Age titles shows that you either completely forgot the writing in those games, or are creating different versions of them in your head.

My problem with Disco Elysium is that push commie shit so hard but:

1. The commie characters are unlikeable assholes.

2. The justification for still pursuing even after more disastrous failures than the optimists/liberals is the religious “because is beautiful”.

Like the writers cannot go full Red because they know, deep down, that is a failure. The game bitchs about not compromising but you can tell the whole game doesn’t want to do it too. And I’m not sure is intentional or not, like if the developers are aware of this and is part of the game or just don’t want to deal with it like the MC.

I've really lost patience with jrpg "let's go, gang" everyone standing in a circle, every single scene each one of them says one line in turn because everyone has to be acknowledged for being present even if it's filler bullshit like "do you really think we can succeed?" "I'm sure of it!" "yeah, we can do this!"

everyone reiterates their entire character arc in every scene, "my father may be dead, but I can still make him proud by trying my best!" "my allegiance to my country doesn't come before what my heart tells me!"

I prefer the UK voice acting for games a lot more nowadays. Partially because I can't tell the actor from the voice as in with North American voice actors I can pretty much pick out certain actors.

Going the route of casting lesser known and newer actors is also a good idea that more studios should be doing. Gives some variety and fresh voices.
