Speaking as someone who did heavily focus on Japanese history in school, I have always considered Yasuke to either be A) a samurai or B) so close to one that it's honestly not worth drawing the distinction. It's commonly agreed upon that he was A) given a sword by Nobunaga, B) given residence in Nobunaga's palaces, C) given a stipend, and D) he was a bladebearer/personal bodyguard for the daimyo himself. The only thing that complicates things is that Nobunaga didn't live long enough to elevate Yasuke to full-on landowner status before Mitsuhide killed him and let Yasuke go. He was only with Nobunaga for around a year before the Honnoji massacre.



But frankly, he had all of the classical emblems of samurai status, so I see very little reason to hem and haw over the particularities of his exact historical title. It's never been a particular point of contention until racist idiots decided to make it a culture war.

It frustrates me so much when people outside of China, many of whom live wealthy and luxurious lives thanks to cheap Chinese labor, have no understanding of how the Chinese economy works. It demonstrates tremendous American egocentrism and a complete lack of basic economic comprehension.

I can't believe that many Westerners are still unaware of Chinese within-border immigrant workers.

The next paragraphs are for people who don't know:

Within-border immigrant workers are one of the unique ingredients that propel Chinese economic growth. Chinese job opportunities are predominantly concentrated in the east of China, particularly in ports along the sea such as Shanghai, Shenzhen, Guangzhou etc. There is a significant economic disparity between these areas and the deep west and south of China. They are unable to take their families with them due to Chinese hukou regulations and economic issues. When may people in the West talk about WFH, 6-hours of work, and a four-day work week, there are millions and millions of Chinese immigrants workers—297 million in 2023, according to Chinese national statistics—who had to leave their home, live in a dirt cheap rented room in a big city, and grind day after day, even returning home once a year became a luxury...It generated a tremendous social problem in China, and we have a particular name for it, "留守儿童/Left-behind children," which implies millions and millions of children who must grow up in rural areas and villages without their parents because they need to find work far away...


And somehow I've seen some abosolutely insane dillusion talk such as "no one is struggling like here" in American.

This topic started out nicely, but it has since devolved into something stupid, so I will just say it. There is a reason why Xiao Hongshu, rather than the hundreds of other Chinese social media platforms, gained popularity in the US. As I previously stated, Xiao Hongshu is built on content provided by Chinese middle-class women. What you see on it is typically the most glamorous portion of China. This is why many Americans find it easy to grasp and enjoyable. There are social media platforms that are more focused on China's rural areas, and I don't believe most Americans can stomach it.

As someone who's people were and still are currency for capital since the nation's inception basically, all I can is LOL. America is one of the few empires that deserves ZERO nuance, just objectively as it exists today and since its inception, evil in the most cartoony unrealistic way possible. You can barely even talk about it because no matter how true it is, it's going to sound like something form a kids tv show. Like literal world domination, mass oppression of 1/3 of every nation on the entire planet, being MVPs for the destruction of said planet, being a literal God of War etc are things that absolutely should not exist outside of fiction, but it does. And as seen in this thread, it creates humongous cognitive dissonances for people that just sort of exist in it and are able to cope because it's not like we are cartoon type freedom fighters that normally go along with these things in our heads.
