As a non-american adult and a somewhat ashamed weeb, I have never actually understood the need for sexual gratification in my videogames or indeed the compulsion to popularise it regardless of whether you're straight or not. Righting the decades-long wrong of the original game and also making sure the employees at Square Enix all get a big bonus when they sell new figures of said characters in beachwear.

I recently got kicked out of a Discord I was following. Not throwing shade, I partly understood why. I either didn’t gel with them as a community, I said one or two more annoying things, maybe a combination of stuff. One nice fellow from the group told me not to take it personally, move on, whatever. They’re right.

Except I still hate when this happens and I do take it personally, Not in a vindictive way, but in a self-reflective “What did I do wrong?” way. Frankly, I hate when it happens because I start overanalyzing, wondering if I’m just a dick who can’t get along with people or if I’m a tryhard trying to emulate the “internet persona” in a half-satirical half-“just jokes bro” sort of way. Probably doesn’t help I’m the rambling type as well, being it was a small community and I was trying to pass time during the quiet periods in my job.

Regardless, it still stings when it happens, and it’s happened more than once. Way back in the early 2000s I got banned from a forum that I honestly thought I was fitting in well with, until it turned out that a lot of the members despised me for whatever reason, and the resentment was building up. It happened again a couple more times in other forums, and I end up in that same state of self-reflecting and depression. Even here, where I like to think I’ve cemented at least a tolerable online presence, I ended up being banned for a month over a comment I made, and it once again brings me back to wondering how to balance my traits of loneliness and fanboyism?

Or maybe I shouldn’t care at all? I’m curious how people here handle it, if it’s happened. I know it’s literally impossible to get along with everyone on the internet, but when it’s a small community based on a shared interest, that tends to hurt a lot more.

I think what often gets 'lost in translation' is that in Japan nudity and sexuality are often used as a form of 'comic relief'. In videogames, TV shows, anime, manga's etc. and it's not just the women who are the 'target' either. That's why it shows up in places where you least expect it or a game or show that looks like it's just about the T&A is actually more about the silliness than it is about the T&A.

In US media it is mostly treated as a very serious subject, either as a power fantasy, character development or some of type reward for the hero that gets the girl. 

European media varies but on a basic level it's mostly just there. Even in a dull boomer BBC detective series half the cast has an affair with the other half of the cast at some point in the show. They also play into the usual fantasies, older woman hooks up with black stud, 60 y/o priest has a secret fling with a 20 y/o intern, swimsuit scenes etc. . 

Now when you take the boat to mainland Europe and end up in The Netherlands every mainstream TV show or movie is basically a softcore porn. If the movie covers a dark theme like WW2, they'll just make sure to throw a rape scene in there. Any radio station you listen to, 90% of the intro's will be about sex or something perverted. Talk shows? Mostly about things related to sex. In fact one of our most popular primetime talk show hosts was mostly known for bagging the women in his houseboat after he "interviewed" them. And when something awful is 'leaked' like a literal pisstape of a 50+ y/o washed up model everyone has seen it.
