OAKLAND, Calif. - The Oakland NAACP has called on city leaders to declare a state of emergency due to rising crime, calling the situation a "crisis," and has urged residents across the city to speak out against it.

The group, alongside Bishop Bob Jackson of the Acts Full Gospel Church, issued the statement on Thursday, blasting both city and county officials, as well as social justice movements.

"Failed leadership, including the movement to defund the police, our District Attorney’s unwillingness to charge and prosecute people who murder and commit life-threatening serious crimes, and the proliferation of anti-police rhetoric have created a heyday for Oakland criminals," the letter states.

It goes on to say residents are afraid to leave their homes, to go to work, or enjoy recreational activities throughout the City of Oakland. It highlights a number of recent high profile incidents in which women were targeted by "young mobs," residents of Asian descent were robbed in Chinatown, street vendors being robbed, and even news crews having their cameras stolen.

"African Americans are disproportionately hit the hardest by crime in East Oakland and other parts of the city," the letter states. "But residents from all parts of the city report that they do not feel safe."

The letter’s release came on the same day when dozens of Oakland residents packed a community meeting on public safety and demanded District Attorney Pamela Price and members of the Oakland Police Department do something to address what many see as out-of-control crime.

The NAACP and Bishop Jackson call for more police officers being hired, quality education and mentorship for Oakland’s youth, and reinvestment in blue collar jobs.

"Oakland should focus on creating skilled industrial and logistics jobs that pay family sustaining wages, and vocational training so Oakland residents can perform those jobs," the letter states. "Unfortunately, progressive policies and failed leadership have chased away or delayed significant blue collar job development in the city, the Port of Oakland, and the former Army Base. That must change!"

The letter finishes by urging members of the Black community to speak out and demand change to improve public safety across Oakland. It also calls for White, Asian and Latino residents to speak out "and stop allowing themselves to be shamed into silence."

"There is nothing compassionate or progressive about allowing criminal behavior to fester and rob Oakland residents of their basic rights to public safety," the letter states. "It is not racist or unkind to want to be safe from crime."

Thankfully the cops are there to protect the community from passive aggressive members who don't want to cooperate:

I'm going to be honest, some of these takes saying the story is basically game of thrones give me huge "Guy who has only watched Boss Baby watches another movie" vibes lol. Final Fantasy XVI is blatantly derivative of Game of Thrones in its narrative and thematic framings.

It clumsily drops the pretense several hours in—shifting toward recognizable Final Fantasy tropes—because it has no idea what made the books/show work in the first place, and only manages to lift superficial elements from GoT’s tone, narrative, worldbuilding, and characterization in an effort to earn its M rating and attract a new audience to the series.

Amateur hour language historian is fun and all. But it doesn't excuse that language and meaning changes. Why are some insistent on defending the word?

I believe people aren't defending the word so much as they are bewildered by the outrage over the word in this context, as I am. No one is going to remember or care much for using the word "pussy" when McCarthy and Republicans are stripping voting rights, civil rights, and making the power of police stronger. That's where I am.

These things aren't mutually exclusive. Everyone understands the larger issues here and that McCarthy is a key part of suppressing peoples' rights in this country and that him being stood up to in general is what we need to see, but we also don't need the boys club of Era to explain why the usage of "pussy" needs to be protected and how it's not actually gendered but that when people say it, they're talking about house cats.

The kneejerk reaction from everybody who follows videogames, left, right & center, against any government regulation, any oversight, even oversight from groups that represent industry trade groups, even legislation proposed by the most progressive members of American government , is wreckless libertarianism. Videogamers are particular marks for this kind of libertarianism, we're so easily manipulated. It's why Steve Bannon, the architect behind Donald Trump's MAGA movement, cut his chops in videogames.

I get why it's been the norm for 40 years and our toothless regulation around this allows it to persist. I think we have to be more measured in our responses and reactions to things that can help lessen the damage of things that are wrong. I get the objections, I used to be an absolutist on this as well, 20-30 years ago, yknow "Keep your government hands off my videogames" and what not, but I think unfettered, uncontrolled, poorly regulated growth of privacy collection has led to a surveillance economy that is significantly worse than the modest compromise of privacy that could help diminish the surveillance economy for the next generation. Are there risks? Of course, there are always risks. But I believe persisting the risks of the surveillance economy, especially as it pertains to data collection of children, is riskier and measured adults should be more willing to understand the balance of something than to immediately chant "FUCK OFF" whenever regulation or compliance with regulation is raised for review.

I also don’t think that age verification for consent for child privacy protections is “very bad,” at least compared to the alternative of the libertarian hellscape of surveillance economy that we have today. This is the justification of “government can’t regulate my industry,” that has produced the technological landscape we have today of toothless regulation of technology. It’s always a mix of “why bother kids will just get around it so we have to let data collection happen unobstructed” and then when there is an application to government regulators who should be involved in this oversight it’s “fuck off this is soooo very bad they’re gaslighting me.” And then you just have the plainly right wing arguments that government can’t be involved because some guy in government once thought the internet is a series of tubes. It’s a constant rationalization against any sort of regulation and oversight.

Ideally I would want more regulation that compels this, as opposed to industry trade groups, but after seeing the tenor of any threads about even progressive legislation, I know that the video game and technology community vastly prefers the libertarian surveillance economy to anything else. What frustrates me is when otherwise progressive or liberal people can’t see that they’re just perpetuating the Reagan-era or Bannon-esque argument that government can’t do anything right, and the fear of devils in details means we have to protect the status quo. I don’t think we do, but it will take compromise and regulator review.

For a real world example of how unfettered personalization algorithms hurt kids, Instagram/Facebook was protected from liability on hurting teenage girls and contributing to body dysmorphia and suicidal ideation around minors because technology companies successfully fought protection of younger teens online and that regulation has persisted to today. It should be updated but there’s very little appetite to do so, people want young teens protected, but influence campaigns always turn public approval of legislation against more regulation. Personally I think that the argument against regulation isn’t sufficient based on what researchers and the technology companies themselves know about how personalization algorithms and targeted advertising harms young people. But we always come up with reasons for why government can’t intervene (the prevailing argument is usually about how once a Republican theorized that the internet was a series of tubes, so even if progressive democrats and their informed staffers craft regulation around that, “can we really expect government to know how to regulate something so complicated and with so many pitfalls as technology”, and so we’re left with this half-system where the smallest amount of effort — asking the FTC to weigh in on consent verification software — is a bridge too far. The harm persists to a new generation:

I keep forgetting search works on this forum. I wanted to pair the above posts attacking people for not wanting their lives policed and how a lack of cops is helping Steve Bannon win with this one:

So I shower every Tuesday and Thursday morning. That's when I go to work at the office.

I shower every Tuesday night, that's when iplay bball. that'll be back to 2x week come Sept.

I shower every time I exercise but that's probably only like... 1 a week at the most these days.

And I shower anytime I do yard work or anything strenuous to be sweaty.

But since the pandemic and being the default parent at home I rarely shower on the weekends unless it's some specific thing that requires it. This would have sleeved me out 4+ years ago but honestly it's kinda sad I just have no fucking time to myself Saturday and Sunday and when I do have to e to myself (like 930 after putting my kid to bed) I'll want to play videogames or watch TV or something. Most times on sat / sun im just go go go with parenting stuff from 730 am until 930 pm. If my wife has the kid away for some reason like she goes to my in laws (which almost never happens without me) then I'll usually do yard work or something I've put off like cleaning/organizing, in which case I do shower.

But man like the time I have to myself is nill sometimes.

IIRC, Peter Dinklage responded to Disney about how hurtful it was to cast little people for these roles and so they changed it.
