Nepenthe wrote:Okay, so I didn't think we would have to issue bans in a thread about a racist. Like, I had a potentially naive hope that Era could navigate that discussion without issue until I woke up this morning. But I feel it's important enough in this instance to explain why we did so.
Simply put, Black suffering is expected. It is not just made invisible or downplayed; we collectively expect Black people to physically and psychologically suffer in all manner of ways, and we host this expectation without any regard for the possibility of Black people fighting back. Look at the innumerable conflicts and genocides in African communities and diasporas we do not actually talk about compared to other countries and communities. Look at the ways in which we reflexively appeal to pacificism when Black people are attacked.
You may ask, well why do we do this? It is because Black suffering is a significant material basis for the way in which our society functions. The US and Western Europe, and you could make the argument current world affairs as a whole, literally cannot exist as they do today if it is not on the back of centuries of brutal suffering and exploitation of the African peoples. And from this material basis emerges centuries of cultural justifications for it: rampant dehumanization, myths about our pain tolerance, or even just an inability to give a damn or becoming numb to seeing it over and over again.
So, in a conversation where someone rightfully points out that the only person in this situation who actually got hands put on them is a Black man, that while the white girl has endured emotional suffering, the Black man has endured both the physical and the emotional trauma of the moment...why would you get mad at that? What is it in you that is offended when someone points out that the Black person was the biggest victim in a given situation, and that his pain has been collectively overlooked? Why was it overlooked? Would you have overlooked it if it was another minority?
I have made no bones about how I feel about the political inclinations of this forum, but this is a moment to lay them bare: Era has light years to go when it comes to just seeing Black people as people worthy of protection from violence, as people who do not deserve to have to take violence from white people "with grace and dignity" by just not doing anything about it because that disturbs the status quo, to fundamentally understand that Black people's suffering is- unlike most other groups- uniquely and fundamentally paramount to the maintenence of Western supremacy, and that there are long conversations about the contradictions that exist to be had if you in any way consider yourself an anti-racist ally.
Sorry. You don't and never will have any ground to stand on to get in your feelings that someone pointed out that you had more sympathy for a white girl who was embarrassed than a Black man who was physically assaulted. Not until this system is broken. Take this time to do some questioning and introspection.
This is 5 seconds from a video that shows a dumb dad doing dumb dad shit, you mentally ill freakshow.

Unless, of course...
Racist is the default that one has to be proven innocent from.
Wait a second, I'm beginning to think Nepenthe just doesn't want any alternative explanations, because she'll discover her life is so devoid of meaning outside of participating in racial identity politics, conflict, and ethnonarcissism. Successful black people that don't consider racism an all-consuming issue in their life probably make her more furious than Dylan Roof because they force her to look at herself.

She's obviously IN. ON. IT. and thinks exactly like her father.
Nepenthe's views are so irrational and hard to believe that she's been an admin on Era and banning people for saying things like, "Uh, maybe there's another explanation?" for like 4 years, and they still have people saying "Uh, maybe there's another explanation?" and getting banned 4 years later. Even years of forcibly culling the suppressive-persons to create a tightly maintained echochamber cult still doesn't produce 100% adherence to her irrational bullshit. That's how fucked up she is.

People don't seem to understand that oppression (and to a very large degree, prejudice) is fundamentally social. As you've said, when black people's suffering is treated as "just a thing that happens" by the people in the situation, the police, the newscasters that report on the event, the people in a forum... The more people that treat a thing as normal, unimportant, expected, the more it persists. Racists love being around other racists, especially when they have other forms of power (And that principle obviously applies to all forms of prejudice, like misogyny).
We obviously feel for the student in this situation because she's embarrassed by her father's horrible behavior and he also kinda ruined her moment. Why is the empathy for the man who was assaulted not obvious to some of you? That he was afraid of someone coming aggressively at him (As if some random person coming at you on stage during an event isn't scary because you have no idea what they're going to do), that he wasn't angry for himself and the people around him, that he wasn't embarrassed because someone pulled this shit just because of his race?

That kind of validation is existentially vital for her survival to keep the self-awareness and despair at bay. They don't even know what happened to Kiwi Farms, they think it "changed hosts" or something. They have no clue that it's been stalked around the internet by a harassment campaign that targets company executives personally and privately to get them to violate TOS and eventually escalate things to blackholing entire parts of the legal internet. (And likely is involved in actual federal crimes.)
It's so fucking funny to me how blind they are about the shit that actually harms marginalized people. You can get how many fucking pages about some depiction of something in some media, or Nepenthe banning and lecturing the whites about some disruption at a graduation ceremony, and how it's the end of the world but some real world shit they don't just cheer on but nobody in the threads ever pushes back against. I don't mean in the case of Kiwi Farms, whatever I'm not expecting miracles, you know all the times I incessantly point it out in other less "internet" situations. But they seriously don't care. It's all a defensive LARP to excuse whatever the fuck they're on about at the moment. YOU CAN'T DISAGREE WITH ME, I'M A GREAT DEFENDER OF THE MARGINALIZED. (Which is why I advocate for systems that will harm them most of all!)

OK, let's break this down.
- Quitting a "job" where you don't get paid is not hard. You just walk away. It's not a job.
- If you have a moral objection to an organisation where you are giving your time for free, you aren't obligated to finish the work you were given to do. It's not a job. You're not being paid.
- Newsflash. It's not hard to get a "job" at a publication that doesn't pay, BECAUSE IT'S NOT A FUCKING JOB YOU IDIOT!!!!!!
- You paid to go to the Elden Ring event in Paris with your own money and produced work for free which a company profitted from. It's not a privilege.
- Against everything that you said about "It's not a "for exposure" kinda deal so whatever." It actually IS a "for exposure" kind of deal because you're NOT BEING FUCKING PAID!!!!!!
