Let's be real, most videogames and especially most JRPGs have retarded writing. 

Disco Elysium, as commie as it is, is still leagues above the rest. Maybe Planescape Torment too, the old Fallouts, but I never played these.

Motherfuckers need to read more.

My problem with Disco Elysium is that push commie shit so hard but:

1. The commie characters are unlikeable assholes.

2. The justification for still pursuing even after more disastrous failures than the optimists/liberals is the religious “because is beautiful”.

Like the writers cannot go full Red because they know, deep down, that is a failure. The game bitchs about not compromising but you can tell the whole game doesn’t want to do it too. And I’m not sure is intentional or not, like if the developers are aware of this and is part of the game or just don’t want to deal with it like the MC.

True, although I ended up playing the centrist, never bothered with the others. But I believe that's the point of the game, there's not a real answer to fix the world.

Either I'm going senile or games got worse with this over time. 

It's like JRPGs--despite holding no other tradition sacred--have some ancient allegiance to that part of a 16-bit, barely-animated dialogue moment where each little 20-pixel-tall sprite says a unique version of "we can do this!" in a quickly dismissed textbox.

This worked (almost without notice) back then because graphics barely existed at the time, therefore you needed to leverage every trick in the book to build character and presence for an ensemble cast. This little go-team roll-call moments were one of those tricks, and it only took about 30 seconds of the player's time.

You can do all of that with a pose or a facial expression now! You really didn't need to recreate it with 100% accuracy + full voice acting + elaborate individual character animations that you can't skip unless you want to bypass the entire scene.

Hot take: Vagrant Story is the reason why localization wars are the way they are.

Matsuno is good writer, and I hear he is satisfied with the changes localization did with his game, but Vagrant Story localization was a happy accident that is not worth replicating most of the time. 

Specially now that every single video game localization team thinks that they are better at writing, even if they hate the shit out of the work they are “translating”. 

“Hohoho, this game has shit writing (in my opinion), let me spice up and maybe we get a Ghost Stories out of it”  

I know that not every script is solid gold, but you end creating a culture of self entitlement gatekeepers (because they are) that think they know better than others because the language barrier make it easier to gaslight others. 

Doesn’t mean that the other side is much better, specially since some still use google translate as a proof.  But is annoying how transparently dismissive they are of valid criticism.

Yea, I think the localization for Matsuno's games turned out so well because Alexander O. Smith really understood what Matsuno was going for and was able to express it naturally because of his english background. A straight JP to ENG translation wouldn't have had the same effect. But now every localizer out there thinks they can write a better script than the original writers. It's like working designs all over again. :v Awful jokes and hammy one liners everywhere.
