(there are a lot of boring ass children's books too, random slice of life in rural america 1950s where a dog dies or something, and all that makes it a kids' book is that a kid is the main character and the vocabulary is simpler, we don't write successful books like those anymore either)

Wuthering Heights probably wasn’t the best comparison he could’ve made, because that’s what people will focus on instead of his experience. If 1st year literature students are citing books aimed at children that’s a problem. When I was in school our teacher read the whole of The Lord Of The Rings to us. Then gave us The Hobbit to read by ourselves. That was a learning experience which I doubt would ever happen today.

I once got attacked by a random guy on the sidewalk in Chicago. He was carrying something heavy over his shoulder - I still don't know what - and when I walked past him apparently he decided I had the wrong "energy" so he yelled at me to get my attention, then lashed out at me and missed. He then proceeded to follow me for nine blocks, muttering and yelling homophobic slurs at me the entire way until I ducked into a bodega and hid until he walked off.

I have no idea what possessed him to ambush me or stalk me for that long, since I didn't say anything and I wouldn't even have looked at him if he hadn't yelled out at me.

The weird part was when he yelled out THIS IS MAGA COUNTRY!!!

I feel like a lot of you guys haven't actually read the classics at all. That shit sticks around for a reason. My favorite book is Catch-22 and it's still the funniest book I've ever read. Shit is almost 100 years old, it's just that fucking good and it's not the only one.

Anyway, there's obviously a problem but we'll just go on ignoring it because that's what we do in thread about education.

There are also interesting, literary, modern books being written all the time. 

Toni Morrison was writing all through the 80s and 90s...those books are short but also extremely accessible and thematically rich. Song of Achilles was written in 2011, and the author is still alive and writing!

It ain't gotta be ancient and dusty Crime and Punishment (though that fucker moves) vs. modern-english YA whatever.

Song of Achilles is great as is Circe.
