Quote:In 2021, Sony announced it was working on a next-generation headset it described as “a next-gen VR system that enhances everything from resolution and field of view to tracking and input.” Roughly a year later, PlayStation VR2 was officially revealed, with a release date set for February 2023.
Fast-forward to just over a year after its release, and the PSVR2 has not achieved its full potential. Between its lack of first-party exclusives, steep price, lack of backward compatibility, and retail delays, the PSVR2 has barely made a ripple in the VR market.
Now, amid devastating layoffs that include the closure of the VR-focused PlayStation London, it seems like PSVR2 may already be on its last legs. Here’s how we got there and what the future may hold for PlayStation’s troubled VR headset.
Gee, who could have predicted this?
Saying it took a year is generous. This shit was doa especially when they didn’t even bother to make psvr1 games to work on it.

They really have nothing don't they.
These aren't even remasters, hell, do they even run on modern hardware?

Sounds pretty nostalgic to me. Struggling to get old games to run is part of the charm. My pc was dual-boot for years just to play old shit.

it'll just be the dosbox bundled releases theyve had on GOG for years and used to routinely giveaway on origin.
One of their bean counters must have just noticed they put games on steam again and arent cashing in on these lowest possible effort nostalgia bait titles.
You cant make this trash up

To Zanarkand is a great piece of music and knowing it was a time crunch fluke only makes it better.
such a beautiful piece of music that pauses the turning world when you listen to it

To achieve great things, two things are needed; a plan, and not quite enough time.

I don't get it, what's the metaphor supposed to be?
Spoiler: (click to show)(click to hide) Going to be honest. I think Oven 4 pizza looks better than Oven 5 pizza, but that's just me.

I couldn't watch all of it, but the point is that executives have lost touch with what pizza should be. The idea that pizzas cost $1M is equivalent to the ever-escalating costs of making a AAA game, so the fundamental conceit that pizza-is-pizza is wrong. Customers have learned to love the $1M pizza, and offering low-cost visuals and audio like Inscryption or low-fidelity titles like Valheim will only appeal to people who are meta-interested in video games.
The broader mainstream audience is accustomed to the high definition visuals and production fidelity seen in Ghost of Tsushima, Madden, etc.
The trouble is we had massive increases in fidelity for decades, but the difference between Xbox 360, Xbox One, and XSX is not significant enough to rationalize the effort required to create that fidelity level. The returns are too low for the investment.
The pizza analogy doesn't work, because everyone IS actually accustomed to the whacked out PIZZA OVEN FIVE content, fidelity, number of hours of gameplay.
Tell someone that GTA VI will be at the same fidelity as GTA III and watch them act like a child whose birthday party was just canceled.
Come on dude, I get that you only hang out with game developers.
Benji is being facetious over how on the nose the video is.
My bro says that most publishers and developers focus on graphics because that is actually easier than everything else.
Even if your gameplay is kind of shitty, at least your graphics are still good for the trailers and marketing is the line of thinking he says.
The big problem is that there just aren't enough game designers to come up with great gameplay loops, maps, systems, stories, missions etc. and those that do usually end up in executive roles far removed from actual development. Also, the 'creatives' in the industry want to reinvent the wheel or start from scratch instead of building on what already works and lots of big publishers like Nintendo have patents for things that are pretty mundane but legal will point them out and tell you to change them.
Something like a new Perfect Dark should be a fairly straightforward project but they spend 10 years or longer prototyping and still can't figure it out.
[hide]His "mod" team made Day of Infamy in ~3 to 5 months building on Insurgency Source and the first release of Insurgency Sandstorm was developed in ~18 months including the scrapped singleplayer they worked on for 6 months.
Then they pushed for AAA quality, changed company culture, moved to UE5, outsourced post-launch Sandstorm support, expanded the team to 80+ developers, hired "AAA" talent and the result after 6 years... nothing.
Now he is trying to bring Insurgency Sandstorm back to its original sense of realism after the "AAA" creative directors started to turn it into COD with killcams and bright camos and such.
When they asked him what to do 6 years ago, he proposed a Day of Infamy sequel using the Sandstorm engine and great post-launch support for Sandstorm as well as bringing it to PS4. But all sorts of AAA developers came in who had worked at big publishers who sort of looked down on the "modders". He also pitched a C&C-like Switch RTS game.
They brought Sandstorm to consoles years later where it actually does very well because its the only realistic shooter out there.[/hide]

The part I didn’t get was that those video makers are making fun of video game Executives, but not making fun of the pizza eating audience they’re positing. There are only so many people out there willing to play downgraded graphics or indie retro graphic games.
