Steam isnt a monopoly
Steam doesnt do 'very little'
Fucking assclown Steam actually does very little. The "backend" for developers is a real mess and visibility is a challenge. The top 10 or top 20 account for like 90% of the total sales.
But it works and doing very little also means they don't interfere as much as Sony, Epic, Microsoft and other platform holders usually do.
If you have a problem with the Xbox Store as a dev, you have to go through the maze of Microsoft corporate support and escalations which seldom involves a human being who can actually fix something. In some cases an entirely different Microsoft entity is responsible and not Xbox. Epic meanwhile has waiting lists to get shit fixed and published because between Fortnite upkeep and Unreal Engine support they're understaffed. Plus, they often change their policies and conditions. With Valve you can just shoot an email to your friendly Valve rep, who will tape it together for you or fix a bug. Valve is first and foremost a software company with a "if it works don't change it" mentality.
Xbox/Epic etc. do offer a lot of promotions for visibility that sound good on paper but in reality it means they have a lot of control over the message. With Valve it's more like: "We're doing a Steam sale, don't forget to upload your banner". The downside of course is that on Steam your game doesn't get a lot of visibility. It's a level playing field for everyone and divas like Randy don't like that. So Borderlands 4 will sit alongside Hentai Puzzle 2025 and Poop Slinger in the "coming soon" list.
The only promo thing that really works these days is Nintendo Direct. That shit is like magic so developers gladly jump through hoops to get a spotlight and if possible a shadow drop. The Indie World / Partner Direct they aired the other day has 2 million views on the Nintendo of America YouTube channel alone. That's twice as much as Gamescom opening night live and it wasn't even a regular Nintendo Direct. The Castlevania Dominus Collection for example just instantly skyrockets up the charts thanks to the Nintendo Direct reveal.

At this point, if you buy Ubisoft games, you are the problem.

Introducing my kids to the wonders of Street Fighter II on Switch (Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection) using 8bitdo arcade controllers.
The yelling has begun and the accusations of spamming and cheating are following.
Still fun 30+ years later.
I can't wait till they remaster Jersey Devil.

That Black Myth… Whooooooo. I thought people were being contrarian about this because of the controversy, but this is indeed a really good game so far.

I’d give that a shot today. I remember not liking the demo at the time, but that might’ve been mostly because I really liked what the original version of that game was, but they abandoned it in development.

Is that the version with all the letters on the walls and stuff?
I vaguely remember that, a bit FEAR / Alan Wake II like I think.
One of those games is also quite different depending if it was on the 'last gen' or 'next-gen' platform I think.
There was that, and it had the whole target your enemies before attacking, and shoot them all without actually aiming. Like a sort of Deadeye.

Conviction is a case of an entry incongruent with series expectations. It eased up going into 3/Chaos Theory and Double Agent, but those older Splinter Cells were all stealth and going loud is the poor choice. The flow of Conviction expected you to get spotted and play loud. Takedowns refilled your auto kills. Play it like John Wick rather than a stealth game, it’s pretty fun.
Follow up, Blacklist, managed to hit a sweet spot of stealth and action. Great game. Don’t think it sold well.

Please tell me that's at 3x speed...
I bought Star Wars Outlaws. I'm not proud about it, but it was 50 quid on CDKeys so I thought fuck it why not. It's definitely the most Star Wars game I've played. Ubi have nailed the environments. The characters are pretty decent. Mrs Solo isn't bad at all. Game play is heavily influenced by Tomb Raider/Uncharted. Don't buy it if you don't like them because it tries to do the same things as those two. Only not as well.
The biggest issue is the thing everyone's complaining about, the save system. So far it hasn't been a problem but I noticed every time I went into the menu the save option was blanked out. Overall, it's better than I expected. I like the main character better than him from the EA games. She's got more personality and the little muppet is pretty cute. It's not something I'd want to play for hours on end. It's not Baldur's or Cyberpunk. It's something to put on when you want to relax for a bit. 7/10 seems about right for it.
Eh, it looks like a high field of view with the guy doing a bunch of 360s. When he's running and shooting it looks like regular speed gameplay.

When you become further removed from the game it definitely sounds like a more scratch an itch type of game that a lot of games don’t touch in these days.
Honestly with the popularity of “Old guys kicking ass” I’m surprised there hasn’t been a game that played it up in recent times. Closest we got was GoW4. But something in the actual espionage genre would get over huge.
