As the title says, I just don't get the appeal of edgy humour, humour that is made to make people feel uncomfortable and unwanted as possible; humour designed to allow the person saying to be as violent, hateful and bigoted as possible under the pretence of "It's just a joke".

Even on era, this kind of humour is semi-common, often in the form of "boys club" style humour like making provocative thread titles that are done to disgust and make other users uncomfortable (mostly targeted against women because haha! Sperm and jokes about Japanese women am I right /s) or jokes about sexualizing and objectifying women. It's a style of comedy that is very common in the gaming community and is continuously popularized by famous influencers and YouTubers.

To be blunt, so much of it just comes across as being hateful, bigoted and offensive as possible but get away with it because it's "comedy". So much edgy humour I've seen is just (usually) white dudes being as offensive as possible while kicking down while saying "I'm offensive to everyone equally!" and then seeing those "jokes" being defended on mass under the assumption that comedy is above any critique. And of course so much of the time, it turns out these "jokes", especially on the internet weren't actually jokes and the comedian/youtuber/user in question was just a bigot the entire time.

And even if the comedy isn't just thinly veiled (if that) bigotry. I just don't get why people just want to make people uncomfortable. So many people, especially nowadays go into fiction as escapism from the world. Depression is at a all time high and it's nice to be away from having to worry about health, income, family, people literally out to kill you because your trans etc. I'm honestly just kind of sick of "edgy" people going into just to make people more sad and depress and just ruin other people's time.

Like being nasty as possible whether it's just going into game chat to be a cruel as possible (or just sexist and racist), constantly going on about how Pokémon is really super dark because they eat X or Ash is why or creepy jokes about underaged characters from the anime or dear Arceus is Gardevoir so hot lets hyper sexualize her! etc. Posting stuff that is violent imagery or death of a character, constant dark comedy; or just posting stuff to make people feel disgusted. Like why?

And as I mentioned before, so much of it comes across, intentionally or not, goes out of its way to be exclusionary against women to the point that I do wonder if that's the intent at time to make sure women don't feel comfortable in "hardcore gamer!" spaces.

I know this post has been very rambly (and probably doesn't make much sense to anyone other than me) but yeah, I just don't get why edgy humour is supposed to be funny. And just as an aside and this may be just what I see but off the web, it's not teenagers I see being into edgy humour, most teens I know through family or university are actually more respecting (and a lot of cases cleverer) than adults I know. It's usually 30+ year old men who are really into edgy and offensive humour.

Any specific examples? Cause something like "most British media," casts a very wide net, and that's just looking at comedies. Personally I can't think of much that constitutes 'edgy.' Dry, sure. But edgy? Nah.

Most mainstream British Media right now is mocking the very idea of transness all the while supporting transphobes and encouraging hate towards us; wearing cat costumes and other shit humour just to make the point more clear. I didn't think that needed to be said.

Also this is revealing a bit much but you know how they won't shut the fuck up about diversity in FF16? Well it's the first time I can EVER remember a main story character having the same accent as me. It's a terrible attempt at geordie but it's there for once. And you know what, the story is actually about regionalism and pertinent to the history and events of where I'm from.
