My biggest question is why Nintendo, The Pokémon or Game Freak company haven't done anything against Palworld. When it comes to taking down mods that infringe their copyright they're so quick, but even ex-Nintendo employees like Kit and Krysta seem to think no legal action will be made and instead, Nintendo and the TPC are just going to hope this game gets forgotten. Honestly, if a game can successfully get away with plagiarism like Parlwold, then I'd be very scared about the future of the industry. Not to mention, I feel for all the artists whose complains are being brushed off by youtubers and other content creators just because "why defend the billion dollar company?".

It's pretty clearly heavily inspired, don't think any normal person would disagree there. But then they went hardcore into the EVIL AI CORPO CRYPTO BRO CEO angle and THEY STOLE THE ASSETS!!!! and got completely lost in the sauce.

Doubt Pokemon Co has a case here, and instead should look at this and the popularity of Switch piracy that people WANT to play their games on PC and are clearly willing to pay for them if given the option.

It's just really discouraging to see so many dismiss the plagiarism and gleefully applaud the game. It shouldn't be ok to take any artist's design work and use it wholesale in very obvious mishmash combinations.

A lot of comments in the sales thread or on social media are basically justifying it like, "As long as the game is successful and enjoyable in some way, people are okay to ignore any controversies. It is what it is."

Are gamer standards that low? I guess I shouldn't be surprised, whatever gives the next dopamine hit, I guess.

I think it's people stunned that there is such a defense force for the Pokemon company and Nintendo. People talk about Nintendo lawyers like literal hitmen but somehow also believe they need "time" to build a case. The defense force has a hard time accepting that there might be no legal issue here. It feels like another case of people wrapping their love for a franchise into their personality. A parasocial relationship with an IP.

They sound personally attacked that someone could enjoy this game when the monsters look so much like Pokemon as if that's a moral disgrace or something. Add in Internet detectives with either little understanding of Law/programming/computer modeling and/or ulterior motives and you got a stew going.

It always comes back to why people can't handle when others like something that they don't. People can't just not support something they don't like, they have to convince the entire Internet to do the same, and make the people that don't agree with them feel bad for not agreeing with them.

Nobody is dismissing plagiarism and applauding the game. People are just playing a game that looks cool/funny and either enjoying the gameplay or moving on. Players have nothing to lose or gain either way.

I'm sure Palworld devs love all of this controversy. All the way to the bank.

Nintendo could take almost all of the Palworld revenue (in addition to forcing closure) if they did pursue and win in court btw. I'm sure this is now part of the conversation internally, if they are still deciding whether and when to pursue.

I'm referring to Palworld's developer Pocket Pair, who previously and famously made a game heavily ripping off BotW and has an upcoming game heavily ripping off Hollow Knight.

It's a lot easier to assume that the dev who loves ripping shit off did in fact trace/copy/steal/plagiarize some Pokemon models, rather than this weird narrative that despite their entire history and next game being plagiarizations, they really did try to make their own fresh original designs that unfortunately and coincidentally have some distinct similarities and a Twitter user made a bunch of fake 3D models showing off fake similarities because they're a hater :(

Eh...for music there is not just lyrics but also composition of the song itself and its recordings, if Weird Al didn't get permission (and probably share publishing rights) he would have gotten in trouble from the people who own the music unless he basically made analogous knockoffs of those musical compositions as well. Putting funny lyrics over someone's song does not protect it under parody. This is also why sample clearance is usually a huge pain in the ass, there are like 10 parties involved

Back when I was still young, I had a director who literally tried to pressure a bunch of the other actresses in my theatre company into kissing me during rehearsals and he kept giving notes about it, and all of us were SUPREMELY uncomfortable. None of us wanted to do it, none of us found it sexy, and it just completely soured the rehearsals whenever he did it. There was NO reason for kissing, much less "believable kissing", during an early-days rehearsal.

We did not keep him for much longer after that stuff. You really need a professional working with your actors to ensure proper boundaries are set and not crossed to ensure everyone is as comfortable as possible for the work they're doing. Improper intimacy protocols can lead to all kinds of on-set problems, including opening the door to deep personal trauma for some of the performers.
