Hobbies are expensive. That's it.

To really cultivate a hobby you need both free time and money, or at the least financial stability, also the space to perform said hobby in.

So ya, as people have to work more, spend more on the necessities, you're going to see fewer people able to enjoy certain hobbies

The problem is brick and mortar places centered around hobbies died off to a degree. Due to the economy and real estate price gouging; rent seeking. Private equity destroying companies that were in the hobby business. Etc etc.

This also destroyed a lot of third spaces for people to gather in person and share hobby activities.

I think it's more for economical reasons than for technology reasons, but I think they both contribute to the erosion.

So yes, I think it's eroding, but just not specifically and exclusively due to smartphones and the attention they take from people.

Hobbies are dead more because wages have been stagnant and because less and less people have space in their homes for it, I think. harder to host group gatherings around hobbies, harder to store the materials for hobbies, harder to display artistic pieces that are produced from hobbies, and just harder to afford hobbies at all when housing and food are up significantly and wages aren't.

 

If these arguments are true, then all of these things should be increasing, not decreasing.

But I'm not seeing hobbies being absorbed by social media. I still read,

There is an argument to be had that sedentary hobbies are on the rise and active and creative hobbies are on the decline, but that's probably been true since the printing press made books affordable to the masses and certainly true since the age of radio and television.

Yeah, when everybody had to work from sun up to sunset or they would starve, they just had so much time for active and creative hobbies. It's so terrible now that all of us have too much free time thanks to the printing press.

One of the major issues with authoritarians is they don't like being told they're wrong, so they get rid of anyone willing to do that and that means getting rid of competent people and replacing them with Concur Sirs. Just out of curiosity, am I the only one kinda side-eying those designs we've seen for Peach, Daisy, Pauline in Mario Kart World? I'm not even going into details, and if I got a bunch of "what are you even talking about" replies I know what's up, but.. I mean, do they only feel weird to me? Kinda like someone designed Sesame Street characters, but with sexy legs and hot pants/skintight suits, bikinis, and spent ours working on getting those right? Don't care for Halo, Destiny or Bungie in general really, and never played an extraction shooter, probably going to pick this up depending on price just due to the artstyle and the fact that I've not played an extraction shooter before.
