Unless literally every single video used to train this model had the creators of it personally contact the people whose videos they took to train it to get consent then it is made is created from stolen data. Stealing doesn't stop and end at "Well, is this video of you on social media copyrighted? What about this artwork with your signature? 🤔 "

It's putting emphasis on legality, in a world where laws famously fail to keep up with technology. When using this thing in our skulls---> 🧠 <---- should bring grown adults to the conclusion that it has NOTHING to do with legality. My first thought when I see this shit isn't "Yay now I can finally make that film I wanted to make."

I have no idea, and you don't either we have no information on the data gathering process for that model. It is conceivable that they just bought illimited access to stock footage data to train it.
And in the case the model was trained on stolen data whatever that means right now, it is important to not say shit that will make it easy to dismiss you as a complete luddite. The model doesn't regurgitate training data, it learns (sometimes concrete and sometimes very abtract) patterns and concepts from training data.

Edit: Also to be clear I'm not a tech bro, I'm a researcher. I'm not here to gaslight but to try to elevate debate on this subject above the usual basement level analysis of this field of research. I admit I have a vested interest though, I'm interested in having informed people debating a very real and very dangerous problem looming over democracies. Instead of the usual "lol we're doomed" or "that's theft because it's just copying the original data".

It is important to note that the model has been trained on a 2D projection of a 3D environment. With enough data it can learn abstract concept of depth and occlusion, limited object permanence, etc ... But without actual knowledge of the third dimension, there wil probably always be cases where the illusion breaks when generating content like that. It obviously can't grasp actual depth as a concept because it is most likely not encoded in the original data, our brain can make educated inferences with regards to volume and depth in videos because of preexisting knowledge about the rules that govern the 3 spatial dimensions of our universe. The model doesn't have that luxury. Yet.

You keep talking about the possibilities of it improving while not at all expressing any opinions about the consequences of said technology. Do you just not care? Can you just STOP infodumping about how it works, gaslighting about whether or not stolen data was involved, and just, express, an opinion, on the consequences? If you can write a paragraph's worth of sentences in this post I quoted you certainly must have the knowhow to express an opinion about why this is justifiable.

To be fair, AI must seem pretty cool if you've never actually given much thought to literally anything except your own whims. I can see why it would be a downer if people kept bringing up stuff like "our interdependent economy" or "social relations" or "standards of shared truth" or "ethics." Buncha pessimists.

The problem is that we were probably always destined to get where we are. Science being what it is, incentives economic or otherwise being what they are. If it's not discovered through public and open research, it is (like we are witnessing now) through closed and private research. If not openly in the US, or the EU (which is the best world to live in unfortunately) then covertly in China. It has the unbearable stink of capitalist incentives all over it but it's because the rest of society is just too slow to respond to the lightning fast allocation of resources that capitalism enables (externalities be damned, which is a problem I agree). We should have had laws on the books 3 years ago to avoid the worst, but we don't. So unfortunately in my opinion the best case scenario now is to dominate the field in any way possible and openly declare to everyone and especially politicians, anything on the internet is untrustworthy now, fix it or burn.
