The way a number of people were dogpiling on Dubs felt like another potential breakout moment so it's a shame he sent one of his asslickers to close it up. Plus the comment sounds like they've banned the topic rather than hoping it would simmer down like the last three times.

Activists from the US Haitian community have joined in a protest against Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto: Vice City at New York's City Hall, claiming that the title "advocates the killing of Haitians as entertainment."

The protests follow a feature run by American station CBS in a section called "Shame On You", which alleged that Vice City is a game with an "ugly, racist twist" and accused Rockstar Games and its president, Sam Houser, of "cashing in on racism and violence".

"Players are instructed to exterminate an entire ethnic group," howled the report, referring to a section in the game's dialogue which states "I hate those Haitians. We'll take them out, we'll take these Haitians down."

"To kill the Haitians like beasts, like nothing, you are attacking our self-esteem, our respect and everything that we have," commented Dr Henry Frank, director of the Haitian Centers Council. "You don't know where you are going to get some crazy mind who will apply exactly what they have seen on the game."

To back this up, the report helpfully drags up a self-confessed Vice City addict who told CBS that "I think you have to have a strong mind to be able to play this game and not want to go out and kill people."

Now the controversy over the portrayal of the ethnic minority group in Vice City has reached a new level, with protests at New York's City Hall, and a statement released yesterday by the Haitian Centers Council and Haitian Americans for Human Rights which condemned "a cultural attack on the millions of Haitians living in the United States."

The Haitian organisations are expected to announce actions to be taken against Rockstar Games in the near future.

Of course, the fact that the group referred to as "the Haitians" in the game is in fact a rival drug trafficking group, rather than being a generic term for an entire ethnic group, doesn't seem to have been considered. Never let it be said that the American conservative media would let the facts get in the way of a good dose of outrage.

After all, that area of the media has been getting good mileage out of Grand Theft Auto recently. Only weeks ago, the game was widely condemned after two teenagers who shot and killed a driver on a local highway stated that they had been influenced by scenes in the game. The family of the murdered man is now suing publisher Take 2 Interactive in a $100 million lawsuit.

I'm not sure if this is the right place to discuss this, so please point me in the right direction if it's not. But the decision to not only close that thread but to ban all future threads on the topic seems like a pretty heavy one to make.

I'm sure that the nature of that thread, combined with how the majority of Americans are reacting to the murder, is making it a topic that needs to be moderated more than usual. There were certainly posts that went too far. (For example, there is a difference between proclaiming your lack or care for the CEO's death or saying that you understand why it happened and implying that it's time for more CEOs to die.)

However, this is the literal biggest news story in the country and will continue to be a huge story throughout 2025 and throughout the eventual trial. Banning all discussion on one of the biggest news stories of the next year is a pretty major decision and not one I can think of happening in the past and I think sets a pretty dangerous precedent.

That thread, and future ones, can easily be moderated by taking action against users (like the one who got three months for using the shooting in an inflammatory manner in an unrelated thread), deploying temporary locks, and by utilizing official staff messaging that can be present on every page.

As ZeoVGM said above, this story is going to be a major topic every time there's new news on it, and it's an odd decision to decide that the entire site is going to bury its head in the sand as a reaction. Honestly you're just going to end up playing whack-a-mole every time a new thread pops up, but unlike AI or Crypto, there's no megathread to redirect people.

Pretty fucking absurd to ban talk of the biggest news story right now. I've read more "extreme" views all over literally every other platform out there right now.

This is a garbage decision by staff and y'all don't seem to communicate well with one another, let alone the community.

It's time for a number of staff to hang their hats.
Whether it's been too grueling or you've simply lost interest, honestly the reason is between you and yourselves, but quite frankly, insisting to continue running this site when it's clearly a task you despise is not only unfair to the users in its selfishness, but is damaging to yourself.

We're long past the need for change in here.

Again, like I said in my big post, if there's new news feel free to make a new thread. We even have a TRB banner ready for when that happens. For some reason I feel like literally everyone is glossing over the fact I said that.

I also want to note that part of the problem is that people are starting to "joke" about assassinations like this one in other contexts. We literally had someone joke about assassinating a federal judge, something that is generally taken pretty seriously by law enforcement given they are already an assassination risk. What do people think happens when that sort of joking makes it's way over to gaming side or other less serious topics? Seriously, it's bad for everyone.
